Onions are common root vegetables, but not related in any way to potatoes.

Onions are usually used as an accompaniment to the main course, as they are very versatile and they can be prepared in many ways, (grilled, chopped, smoked, caramelized, powdered, etc...) although some people are crazy enough to eat them whole and/or raw. They can thrive throughout the entire world, and thus almost every human culture uses or has used onions in their cooking, even though they have a reputation for making one's eyes water when cut.
