Overview
When Midway filed for bankruptcy, Warner Brothers acquired various Midway assets for 33 Million USD, among them the Midway Games Chicago office. The acquisition also brought forth the ownership rights to several Midway properties most prominent of which was Mortal Kombat. In 2009 originally rebranded WB Games (Company) Chicago, the studio would only a year later in 2010 be folded together with Midway Games (Company) to create NetherRealm Studios and begin work on the newest iteration of the Mortal Kombat franchise under the leadership of Ed Boon (Person). The ninth installment of the Mortal Kombat series was the first game to be developed by the newely named studio and Martin Tremblay, President of Warner Bros. Interactive Entertainment assured fans that they aimed to “re-establishing the brand with Warner Bros. Interactive Entertainment" and that "Mortal Kombat innovates on past games while staying true to the brand’s legendary characters and fighting style.” In addition to Mortal Kombat, NetherRealm alos sought to create a new fighting game IP wholey seperate from the Mortal Kombat line, the fruits of this labor resulted in Injustice Gods Among Us a fighting game based on the DC Comic universe.
