Mode 7
CONCEPT
A simple texture mapping graphics mode on the SNES that allows a background layer to be rotated and scaled. Many game developers used this to create faux-3D worlds and environments.

Overview

Mode 7 is a simple texture mapping graphics mode that was commonly used by games on the SNES. The mode involves the use of a flat background graphic to rotate and shift underneath 2D sprites and UI elements. For example, in the game F-Zero, each of the game's race courses are presented using Mode 7. The player's racer and opponents animate in conjunction with the actual race course; a single flat texture that is rotated and moved to present the illusion that the player is racing along the course at high speeds.
