Super Mario Bros.
It would be difficult to start any conversation on the best games ever made without mentioning Super Mario Bros. So much has already been said regarding Nintendo’s flagship title, it's honestly hard to find an angle to talk about. It is clear that any review about it will praise it as a benchmark of gameplay, design, and ushering in a new wave for an impressionable millennial audience. Yes, this game is already…

Spelunky 2
This is not a game for 95% of people and/or gamers. It is for the sickos and freaks who can live with constant, consistent failures. People who enjoy the journey, no matter the pain it causes. It will take most people hundreds if not thousands of tries to get a win. It may take a lot more than that to get to the true ending- and even more than that for the game's truest final challenges. In terms of rogue-like…

Peter Jackson's King Kong: The Official Game of the Movie
Constant stream of simple puzzles mean you never get stuck but always have something to do, and the environment feels pleasantly physical. Steady pace of set pieces, decent in-game play storytelling, graphics and atmosphere that hold up shockingly well even on the PS2 version let alone the 360 upgrade, companions to worry about which means the pacing stays deliberate and measured - as long as you don't mind the fact…

Tunic
Brilliant sense of discovery. Filling out the manual as you go is a great mechanic. Loses a half-star for frustrating/underwhelming combat and some eyebrow-raising late-game puzzles. Watched someone meticulously translate the in-game language during their playthrough and may never been as impressed.

Super Metroid
Super Metroid is an impeccably designed game. It's remarkable to see how many staples of not only Metroid, but search-action games generally, were born in this game and persist to this day in action games and modern Metroid games, both 2D and 3D! You could release this game today with a modern graphical coat of paint, and it would be among the most buzzed-about games of the year. It's amazing to see where this dev…

007 First Light
Ever since I played it in 2004, I wanted another Bond game like Everything Or Nothing. For someone to expand on that game and its ideas. And when it was announced that IOI were taking the reins on 007 I was hopeful we’d finally get that game. And here it is, First Light rules. It’s the next step in Bond games. It’s not perfect, there are some pacing issues and while the combat is mostly chaotic positive, it can get…
