Flash Gordon began as a comic strip in the 1930s originally created to rival the growing success of the Buck Rogers comic strip.

Flash Gordon (1980)
A feature film based on Flash Gordon, directed by Mike Hodges, was released in 1980. It was an Anglo-Italian production helmed by Dino De Laurentiis. Flash Gordon is perhaps best known for its soundtrack performed by the British rock group Queen, as well as the infamous line "Gordon's alive?" spoken by Brian Blessed's character Prince Vultan.
Trivia
- Originally, George Lucas requested to direct a feature-length Flash Gordon film but was rejected. He would later use the Flash Gordon film serials as a basis for the creation of the Star Wars franchise.
