CONCEPT

A concept common in MMORPGs, a debuff weakens a foes abilities or stats making combat easier.

Overview

Found in many games, a debuff can be found in the form of player abilities or skills. They can also be used in boss encounters, both applied to the players and computer characters. Debuffs can be found in many genres although in many cases is most recognized in MMOs. Effects range from defense reduction to movement speed impediments. Debuffs are seen as negative effects, its counterpart the "buff" applies positive effects to an individual. In many cases, games use the concept of the debuff without making it clear. Both positive and negative effects are a main component of video games to change the gameplay experience.
