Overview

Counter-Strike NEO is a sci-fi multiplayer-focused first-person shooter developed and released by Namco (Company) (in conjunction with Valve) for arcades (using PC (Platform)-based System N2 hardware) as part of Namco's LED ZONE centers on June 21, 2003. An arcade adaptation of the 2000 multiplayer-focused PC game Half-Life: Counter-Strike, Counter-Strike NEO reworks the original's theme from modern-day counter-terrorism to a sci-fi cyberpunk conflict between the private army of the mega-conglomerate "NEO" and the special forces of the United Nations (the Cosmopolitanism Special Forces, or "CSF"). Despite the new theme, characters, and maps, much of the gameplay remains the same as the 1.6 version of Counter-Strike. It is notable for utilizing a mouse-and-keyboard setup in an arcade setting, for its use of LAN and online multiplayer (including a matchmaking system for teams between arcades), and for its single-player "Strike Mission" mode (which can be used to acquire new characters to play as). The original version of the game was later discontinued on April 15, 2005, in favor of a revamped "Ver. 2" revision on August 2005. This version includes several changes, such as updated graphics (with weapon models from Counter-Strike: Source), the removal of the single-player Mission mode, and a rework of the game's characters (which are upgradable in appearance). It received several updates through December 16, 2008, including a new Mission mode, updated rankings, and new characters and maps, before being switched to an "offline" version on February 1, 2010 (with online ranking and multiplayer support disabled). It also received an online visual novel during the release of Ver. 2, known as Counter-Strike NEO: White Memories, that dives deeper into the backstory of the conflicts between the NEO and CSF.

Gameplay

Much of the game plays the same as traditional Counter-Strike, with some changes in balancing, map selection, and the user interface. Only the original's "Demolition" mode is used, with the CSF planting explosives and the NEO trying to stop them (or defuse planted ones).

Characters

Unlike traditional Counter-Strike, in which each character model is based on a sub-faction, Counter-Strike NEO features a collection of unique characters for each faction, several of which are unlockable through the Mission mode. In the "Ver. 2" revision, the entire roster has been reworked, which are now upgradable in appearance based on the player's ranking.
