On Tuesday, EA announced that Respawn entertainment would continue to stake its claim in the Star Wars universe with a whopping three games in development for the license. At first blush, this may seem like a surprisingly heavy commitment with a studio that only has so much development bandwith. However, this move fits right in line with how Disney is shepherding Star Wars and the rest of its b...

Apologies for taking so long with this one, but between Game of the Year blogs and starting school again, it’s been a bit for me to sit down and pump out some blogs. As a recompense, I’ve just thrown all four games I’ve played since the last dubious write-up into one package. Truly I am generous. Clive Barker’s Undying TFW you and your family accidentally unleash an ancient curse of darkness be...

Game : Hyper Three Studio 's Tiny Lands . Release Month : January. Quick Look : None, but it was on an episode of UPF (Brad's pick, @ 1:27:00). Started : 24/01. Completed : 24/01. Something the "casual" gaming arena excels at is finding new twists on old classics. To some extent that's true of most Indie gaming, but specifically I'm talking about revitalizing pen-and-pencil puzzle formats that...

Inversion is a game with some resonance for me. I listed it in a blog I wrote over 5 years ago about games that I had purchased but would never actually play. This, of course, meant that it stuck in my mind enough that I would eventually get around to it. I actually started playing in November of 2020, at a time when I was trying to clear some of my backlog of physical 360 games. I got through...

I started playing video games from a very young age, and it didn't take me long to imagine what it would be like to create my own game. I can still vividly remember two ideas I had back when I was in middle school in the late 1980s. One was an ultraviolent beat-em-up about cleaning up the streets with an assortment of weapons, both melee and ranged, because I was such a fan of Double Dragon . T...

Last week , I used this blog to digest Halo Infinite's Campaign mode. It stands tall on the jigsaw-perfect interlocking of Halo's gunplay and enemy design, and is bolstered by a liberating new grapple. It's also less than the sum of its parts, with the core combat unmoored from and undercut by a generic open-world shell. The packaging of the multiplayer might be even more of a trainwreck. Yet,...

This is my new video about Japan's first graphical adventure game, the company that made it, and how the title caused an "adventure game boom" in Japan's PC market during the early 80s. That game being Mystery House created by Micro Cabin in 1982. Not to be confused with Mystery House created by On-Line Systems in 1980.

The Game Pass Gambols is my chronicle of attempting to at least sample every game released on Game Pass in 2022. Game: Nobody Saves the World Game Type: Action RPG Time Played: Approximately 25 hours. Completion level: Rolled credits. Approachability: High. It's pretty easy and surprisingly intuitive. By a total coincidence, this week's game is another published by Toge Productions - a studio putting out the best the Indonesian Indie scene has to offer, including last week's MagiCat - and like many of the games covered in my concurrent January series, Go! Go! GOTY! , has something of an environmentalist theme. She and the Light Bearer is a fairytale adventure game about a firefly attempting...

This is the third year I’ve actually had the gumption to post a Game of the Year list, and in the past two I’ve written a couple of paragraphs about the year and overall mood I had with the games I played. Well, fuck you 2021, you don’t deserve a couple of paragraphs. Let’s instead get right to my favorite games of a year I don’t want to talk about (yet). (With apologies to Hitman 3 , Resident...

The gaming press, the Internet, and even the business media have been buzzing over Microsoft’s splashy announcement that they are spending nearly $70 billion to purchase Activision Blizzard. A lot of the discussion has focused on how this will play into Microsoft competing in the traditional AAA market and even the mobile market, where Activision subsidiary King has some very profitable titles....

Caveats and stuff Endwalker-I mostly couldn’t play this game when it came out due to queue times and errors kicking me out of line. Once I finally got in I was greeted by a very typical mmo expansion starting quests i.e boring tedious discussions and errands that have little to nothing to do with the story I care about. However! As always they are beginning to pay it off here at about the 40% m...

Preamble Good visual novel-based adventures were to be had in 2021! Well, with the site gearing itself for " GOTY MODE ," I thought I would do something "different. " I have already made a "traditional" 2021 GOTY list and published my yearly "Multimedia Extravaganza," so there's not much else for me to do other than cover industry-wide trends I noticed with my preferred gaming genres. One of th...

A recurring discussion in MV circles (and I bet various other popular subgenre forums) is the definition itself and whether or not game x or y fits within it completely, partially or not at all. Let's start with a basic definition: A Metroidvania, also known as a Platform Adventure , is a subgenre of Action Adventure and Platform games. In short, these are real-time games that focus on platform...

Like I said in the GOTY list, there was a change for me maybe to write a more extended version of that list, and here it is, in fact more that an extended cut, I decided to add a particular omission, which will be the first entry here: Dwarf Fortress While writing the first 2021 GOTY list, I end forgetting a rather small game, which I forget to put, there, because, 2021, was the year which at l...
