The lines have blurred over the years. I got into it a little bit in my previous post , but video games aren't always products of their times anymore. It's not unlikely that you may boot up a game in 2022 only to discover that it isn't the game you played a few years or even a decade ago, and it's always a toss-up as to whether or not that's a good thing. Some games get a second chance after a...

Mars: War Logs That's right: To celebrate a full 50 dubious RPGs for this featureblog, I'm covering one of the most consistent purveyors of dubiosity in the industry today. Also I streamed these games and need to further justify the time I played with them as to avoid feeling like I've totally wasted my life. Developer: Spiders Release Date: April 26, 2013 Time Played: A little over 6 hours Tro...

This week's Indie Game (of the week) is yet another in this mini-series of "2017 games I didn't quite fit into last year's 2017 feature because I have poor time management skills," or "the leftovers" for short. It's also another Indie game where the "Indie" qualifier is disputed: Square Enix actually helped publish the game, providing yet another stark reminder if one was needed that we sorely...

Hello gamers in the Giant Bomb forums Welcome to my blog! A day after Gran Turismo 7's State of Play Deep Dive showcase in February 2022, this inspired me to share my theory on these two of my beloved 1st party Simcade racing game franchises are Gran Turismo and Forza Motorsport. Gran Turismo: The original game started development in 1992 for the unspecified platform. When the original PlayStat...

Possibly the most impressive fan remaster of a video game to date? Way back in February 2014, two RE4 superfans—Albert Marin and Cris Morales—officially began work on their ambitious RE4 re-texture project, making their first blog post about their intentions. It was originally meant to be purely an HD texture pack. But in the course of eight years—in which Albert and Cris toiled away for more t...

I played a lot of great games this past year, but most of them were not released in 2021. You’ll see that next to my 2021 ranking I put the overall ranking based on all games I played, and most of them go quite far down the list. Certainly I’ve been picking out lots of stuff I’ve missed over the last decade or more, so it’s hard for 2021 to compete. Of course, the other issue is that I didn’t p...

Today's installment is a big one, and one of my all time favorites. Read on to find out why! For previous entries in the series, go here Shiren the Wanderer: The Tower of Fortune and the Dice of Fate Time Spent: over 170 hours Completion: Finished main quest and just over half of the post-game dungeons Platform: Switch My first Shiren game was Mystery Dungeon: Shiren the Wanderer on the DS. The First Templar is a bad game. This was not a shock to me, considering its 52% score on Metacritic* and my memory of coverage from its release in 2011. I remember the Giant Bomb quick look of this thing left me intrigued, though, and I bought a cheap copy a few months later with the intent of getting around to it at some point. I later misplaced that copy because, well, it was a cheap copy of...

When I last talked about Halo Infinite's multiplayer, I said that its core play has the potential to endure even as the industry marches into the future. Its longevity isn't down to it simply having countless assignments to turn in or a multitude of trophies to place in a case. It will survive because it could take years to master all of the game's weapons and exhaust all possible combat encoun...

Games from before 2021 that carried me through 2021: GTA V Online For all the flak this game gets, much of it justifiable, the big updates in 2021 (Los Santos Tuners and The Contract) added a lot of new activities and toys to buy. The Contract even included some much-anticipated follow-up on the story and characters from the single player campaign. Best of all, these updates can be enjoyed in a...

I happened to catch a developer interview talking about this week's game, the run-based explormer A Robot Named Fight! and another 2017 game that didn't quite make last year's Dredge of Seventeen feature , and the developer highlighted Super Metroid and The Binding of Isaac as particular influences. That saves me from having to get too deep into how this game is the exact median point between t...

Games I Definitely Played in 2021 Oh hey I forgot I could just post this shit here, huh? Well, here are the games of 2021 that I thought were good, along with some other shit in there. My brain is rapidly decaying so I probably forgot something, but ehhhhhh good enough. 1. Hitman 3 This game whips ass and I will hear no word against it. I think I have put well over a hundred hours into it and I...

Year Summary: One of the things that stuck out to me was how much I wanted to do the act of "grinding," , where you just do a repetitive task for moderate character improvement, in video games in 2021. It was pretty critical to helping me get through so many dang books and podcasts. I read 56 books in 2021. This was an improvement on almost zero in 2020 and virtually none since college. The rep...

2021 was certainly a year of mixed emotions. While it was filled with probably more downs than ups the bright spots really shone through. Visiting family and friends safely for the first time in a year, getting out of the house more, and leaving my old job and joining the Games engineering team at RV (Still wild that I get to say that). And through it all, I played a ton of games. So, let's jus...

This week's entry to the Video Game Hall of Fame is none other than Mario and Luigi's dinosaur buddy, Yoshi!!! Next week's entry will also be a Nintendo character, but not from the Mario series (maybe a sister series). Later on in February, I'll add characters from other companies than Nintendo. Don't forget to visit my Hall of Fame.

I'm So Excited To Fight CHAOS! AWWWWWWWWWW YEAH! FUCK ME UP! If, like many on the internet, you watched the most recent trailer for Stranger of Paradise: Final Fantasy Origin with your mouth agape. Having mustered the courage to watch the nearly five-minute sizzle reel, I can honestly say I am STILL gobsmacked. The trailer is equal parts frenetic action schlock and earnest melodrama. The cavalc...
