Let me just check the clock over here and... yep, it's Explormer O'Clock. Actually, we went ahead an hour in March so it's supposed to be Explormer O'Clock +1 right now. When was the last time I set this thing? Regardless and/or irrespective of all that, our non-linear jumpy-slashy game for this week is Phoenotopia Awakening from Cape Cosmic : a game that's a little (or a lot) more involved tha...

Let's Recall, Recall! Well... this is bound to not backfire horribly. A few weeks back , I wrote an essay on why I found it impossible to be enthusiastic about the future of Xbox consoles and the Xbox ecosystem. Since publishing that blog, I have felt even more resolute about everything I highlighted in that essay. Not only have I been infuriated to see Phil Spencer be named the upcoming emcee...

An explanation of what's going on here can be found in the intro post . Last time we continued with the PS1 in August 1996 when we looked at Tecmo Super Bowl, Madden NFL '97, Jumping Flash! 2, and Alone in the Dark: One Eyed Jack's Revenge . When we last looked at the 3DO we found at least one bright spot in the '94 release calendar when we looked at Gridders, Guardian War, Hell: A Cyberpunk Th...

A poster of Blade Runner 2049 featuring: Ryan Gosling as K, the titular blade runner of this one; Harrison Ford as Rick Deckard, one of two returned for the sequel; Ana de Armas as Joi, interface of that era’s “smart home”; and Jared Leto as Niander Wallace, Mr. Tyrell’s counterpart in this story. Flim review: Blade Runner 2049 25 years is a funny period of time to think about. Look at the last...

We're now at the halfway point for 2024. This has not been a great year of gaming for me so far. I'm looking at what I've played and what I'd like to get through and while I've had fun there hasn't been a lot that was special to me, and there's really nothing I'm looking forward to on the level of a Tears of the Kingdom or a Spider-Man 2. Of course there's stuff I want to play (like the new Zel...

The quest for firsts and mapping out the early evolution of notable video game innovations continues! This week, let's dive into a mechanic that is sometimes divisive, yet can add a layer of excitement to the games that utilize it well: the Corpse Run. A corpse run is when a player, upon dying in a game, is required to navigate back to their place of death to retrieve dropped resources such as...

An explanation of what we're doing here can be found in the introduction post . Last time, we passed through a hell of our own making (aka 1994) with Gridders, Guardian War, Hell: A Cyberpunk Thriller, Mad Dog McCree, and Mad Dog II: The Lost Gold . Last time on the PS1 we crossed into August '96 in the most painful way possible with The Hive, Triple Play '97, Worms, and NFL Full Contact . We'r...

I love the art style they have for character illustrations and wish there were more chances to see it in the game itself. The Switch still represents a golden age for ports and remasters. With hundreds of games finding a new home on the platform, fans continue to beg for more. There are even remakes of games I had never heard of. So it was with Another Code: Recollection , which remakes two gam...

Penny’s Big Breakaway was one of my most anticipated games of the year. I love 3D platformers, and they’ve been having a bit of a revival in recent years, with AAA and AA entries not just from old stalwart Nintendo but also companies like Sony and The Embracer Group. There have also been more than a few indies, and that’s where things get a bit dicier. I love a lot of indie games, but while the...

Maaaaail. Everyone loves getting mail. Or not, depending on how many enemies you have with a copious supply of ricin. Either way, something surprising is coming through that letterbox and what is life without the occasional shock to the system, central nervous or otherwise? We're talking about postal terrorism on this occasion because this week's Indie Game that is of this week is none other th...

The Little Game That Could(n't) The Doom Slayer (ha ha we love our jokes here on giant bomb dot com) DOOM 64 was not exactly set up for success. I mean, just look at its release date: nearly a year after the release of Quake, a game which was (like DOOM before it) more or less a revolution in the way that people played first person shooters, a genre which (by 1997) was evolving enough to make t...

Bramble: The Mountain King is what would happen if you played a few indie hits like Limbo and Brothers: A Tale of Two Sons, then watched a horror movie while reading a book about Scandinavian folklore. You play a little boy, Ole, in an unnamed Nordic land. His sister has gone out at night to explore the countryside. Despite being nervous you follow her because she is your favorite person, and a...

Flim review: Blade Runner (1982) Sure you have, Mr. Batty. As the heat pauses to rise yet the rain continues to fall for days here in the city hosting miHoYo global headquarters, I started to look for film suitable for raining nights. So, 1982’s Blade Runner came up. This year’s August will mark two full decades since my first view of the film. It also had been five years since the film turned...

Film review: Klute Donald Sutherland (1935-2024) as the titular detective in 1971’s Klute. You all are welcome to take this picture and jokingly ask people which season of 24 do they think it is from. Late June in Shanghai is usually a time when raining days and rising heat conspire to make the city feeling like a swamp. June 2024 is no exception. So, paranoia about the lousy weather calls for...

I know I said that my last blog was my final word on 2024's ersatz E3, but as they say at these conferences, I do have one more thing. It's widely observed that not having to present at E3 has been a boon for many publishers; they don't get drowned out in the clamour of trailers and keynotes, but not every developer can break from the pack. The creators in the Wholesome Direct or Black Voices i...

Continuing our "Juneween" summer horror season from last week's Gylt , this time I'm back in familiar stomping grounds (but not that familiar; the explormer s are taking a few more weeks off) with the spooky boomer shooter Hands of Necromancy from Frechou Games . Or, given it's a rare gothic horror medieval variant, a forsoother shooter (a forshoother? Wow, that just plain feels bad to say out...
