E3 2021 was notable for a number of reasons. It was the final E3, taking place in an entirely virtual online format and featuring press conferences from all the usual suspects like Ubisoft, Gearbox, and Microsoft, each presenting games that would help define the entertainment landscape in the years to come. For most of us, however, it was all about the Amico. Of all the E3 moments that have bra...

Well, tarnation. We weren't expecting out-of-towners at the gamer ranch this weekend, but seein' as you came by, why don't you grab a rope, and we'll get to lassoin' the most fascinatin' games of Not E3's big publisher conferences? You won't mind if I jump around with the topics a little. That's the way we get things done around these parts. Sony Between Concord, Marvel Rivals, and FragPunk, yo...

Film review: Terminator 2 Judgment Day 1991’s Terminator 2 Judgment Day is one of the best action movies ever made by more than one metric. Yours truly can never run out of excuses to watch it and the 40 th anniversary of its predecessor is good as any. There is not much myth to bust regarding this one’s inception, but I got my speculation. After 1989’s Abyss became its lukewarm self, it was li...

If there's a popular genre for Indies that I very rarely cover on here, especially in June, it's games that focus on horror and delivering scares and spooks to what is almost assuredly an audience of YouTubers looking to delight their audiences with their genuinely terrified reactions. As such, I don't tend to put a lot of stock in the genre outside of a few that catch my eye either because the...

An explanation of what's going on here can be found in the intro post . Last week we looked at our middle batch of PS1 games from July 1996 with Robo Pit, Olympic Soccer: Atlanta 1996, Star Fighter, and Tecmo's Deception: Invitation to Darkness . Last time with the 3DO we picked back up with the 1994 release catalog with Another World (Out of This World), Cannon Fodder, Club 3DO: Station Invasi...

If I had to list all the upcoming AAA releases that excite me, I could get to… probably two . Indie games, though, are a different story. The various summer showcases put dozens of small games on my radar. That rolled right into Steam Next Fest, where many of those games published demos. Basically, my wishlist is full to bursting. I set aside a day to try as many demos as I could. I didn’t play...

Claire Redfield joins Jill Valentine, Leon Kennedy, Nemesis T-Type, and Chris Redfield as the fifth Resident Evil character to appear in the Video Game Hall of Fame, and the 18th Capcom delegate altogether. Next week's character will also be a Capcom favorite (see the pattern?).

Film review: The Terminator The year 2024 does have one round number anniversary of its own to celebrate: 1984’s Terminator will be 40 years old by October, 2024. “40 years” is actually an uncanny number to think about with this one, as one line in the movie says that life-like cyborgs like the titular killing machine will not appear for about another 40 years. The line was said in fictional Ma...

Geoff Keighley is the absolute king of coordinating lavish, meticulous, and aesthetically modern video game events that are deaf to what the moment calls for. The Game Awards has long garnered criticism for sidelining its eponymous accolades to cram in more trailers for upcoming products. One reason that the games industry isn't great at honouring developers is that any time you spend looking b...

You know what I haven't written about in a while? Explormers . Those games where there's a big map to check out and a bunch of upgrades to help you get around. Whatever happened to those games? Feels like you barely hear a thing about them these days. When I'm not gaslighting my audience like a fiend I tend to partake of these things whenever and however I can and this week felt like another ti...

Let's Take a Trip Down Memory Lane: A Recap of My Previous VR Insights & Recent News I mean... I guess this is better than nothing (Image credit Sony) Two months ago, I penned an essay in response to multiple reports that Sony was ceasing the manufacturing of new PlayStation VR2 devices in light of recent struggles shipping and selling them. However, during Sony's May State of Play , the compan...

I recently posted a blog about my experience with Skull and Bones , the oft-derided Ubisoft flop that they recently let people play for a week for free in the hopes that they'd like it enough to buy it, which seems unlikely given what it's actually like to play. I got to the endgame within that week, because I'm stupid, and once I arrived there I was surprised at what I found. At about the half...

Skull and Bones is one of the first games to make me think that AAA game design might actually be going backwards. Skull and Bones had a free week and I “took advantage” of it to play about 30 hours; finishing the main story, such as it is, and getting 40 out of the 50 Xbox achievements. This involved pretty much no lifing it over the weekend and pouring my time into it during early mornings an...

This will contain a lot of spoilers ! If you haven't played this gem yet, I really hope you do before reading on. Also, I'm not much of a writer, so please excuse the rambling and the typos. Not so sure about these Inquisitors. Dread Delusion is a strange game. It looks strange, it plays somewhat strange and it is set in a strange world. A world where the surviving humans live on floating islan...

Welcome back to another wintry edition of the Mega Archive, still plugging away through the remnants of November 1993 as we head into the final month and the final stretch of this "arc" of the feature. In contrast to the misery so far this November, this entry's actually pretty promising: there's a number of games here which I'd consider worth checking out and even many of the ones that aren't...

I've been thinking about the intellivision Amico a lot recently. This is true much of the time, but specifically in the last week or so after the news came out that Atari had bought the original Intellivision IP from the now nameless Amico company. I'm not the only one who this has affected. One Jeff Gerstmann devoted 20 minutes of his podcast to Intellivision, which is impressive considering h...

Game of the Month: Zilcho Nope, no GOTM this time. I mean, of the many games I played in May one of them is theoretically going to be better than the rest, but this section was intended for deep dives on the big AAA stuff and long-term RPGs I'd normally be playing in-between all the retro games and Indies I was already blogging about elsewhere. This month's been a bit too busy for any of that t...

Welcome to a seasonally festive Hallowmay with Pumpkin Jack , a linear 3D platformer with a sort of MediEvil meets Ghost Rider theme as the titular Stingy Jack, a notorious crook and trickster, is resurrected by the Devil into a scarecrow body in order to defeat humanity's last best hope, the Wizard, in their war against Hell. For as metal as this all sounds, the game is very much geared toward...
