Mento once again finds himself unable to resist opening boxes, though at least this time it doesn't result in an angry crowd of neighbors yelling about their Amazon shipments. Look, building a box fort requires sacrifices, all right?
The internet's favorite N64 ranking show is back, just in time for the system's 30th anniversary. We'll be focusing entirely on the remaining 3D platformers for the system throughout this season, with the inauspicious opening duo of maligned ball-tamperer Glover and the incomplete tie-in Carnivale: Cenzo's Adventure.
May 2026 was a month that saw unexpected heat waves, eventful industry news and rising prices, several releases of what might prove to be the year's best games, and plenty of other notable happenstances, none of which will be covered here. Instead it's more retro gaming and anime bullshit. Don't say I didn't warn you. (Am I even allowed to say "shit" in one of these excerpts? Feels like something I should've asked about first.)
A great man lays dying and as his son, it's imperative for to go against type and do something nice for once so that he won't cut you out of the will out of pure disgust. When the entire world is a chaotic mishmash of Renaissance paintings full of jerks, though, how nice can you feasibly be? Heck, this dog just handed me a pistol. What am I going to do, NOT point it at people?
Another trio of reviews for fan-translated beauties, albeit a very tenuous definition of the term "beauty", that jumped the queue ahead of a hundred other backlog games I should probably be getting around to instead. This update includes: the other half of that King's Field review, the SFC port of the oddly-subtitled proxYs Xak: The Art of Visual Stage, and (sigh) Ripened Tingle's Balloon Trip of Love for DS. Yes, they made a second Tingle adventure game.
Armed with little more than a stack of quarters and a total disregard for the man, Mento checks out this '90s arcade parlor business simulator where success hinges entirely on the capriciousness of teenagers. We might already be doomed.
Everyone's favorite(?) May-centric exploration of semi-obscure fan-translated games returns for another season. This entry looks at the Saturn game Linkle Liver Story, the PC Engine CD-ROM title Galaxy Fräulein Yuna, and the original King's Field for PlayStation.
Between Reverie Under the Moonlight and Moonlit Farewell, the Momodora developers put out a one-off polygonal exploraction game called Minoria and, in the name of Cartographia the Roman muse of maps, Mento's never the type to leave one of these things unplayed for long.
The terms "parryslop" and "friendslop" have drawn their share of critics, but as ZombiePie lays out in this write-up, the terms end up being useful tools for the fringes of the gaming hobby.
This is purely flight of fancy, as there is no way anywhere that the dozen or so “Hollywood talents” would be in such a thing. Let alone the chance a little indie title like this getting an audio-visual adaption in that town of snobs. Still, I am mapping the casting of a franchise that can get archetypes in adventure stories right upon an adventure story that hit me pretty hard recently.
There's no kitten around or pussyfooting this week as we take on the second Cat Quest and... agh, I said all that without even thinking. They should put some damn warning labels on this. "Warning: This game will pun-fry your mind."
It's another round-up of games, anime, and at least one anime-adjacent game. Probably should expand my number of interests, but that's a problem for Future Mento to figure out.
We come to the end of our journey with this, a DOOM you can play on the go! Wow!
Hey, remember how annoying Nintendo was about the SNES port of Wolfenstein 3D? What if that was id this time?
Mento learns how to write haiku in binary (1011/10101/010?) for this cute but bleak exploraction game set in a world made of circuitry where he ends up meeting a lot of resistors and therefore diodes quite often.
Mento checks out the Blossom Tales sequel, wondering if this Zelda homage will finally give Six the chance to slay Joey Russo with the Master Sword. Whoa! (Topical humor? What's that?)
