It’s been an interesting couple of years for me when it comes to playing video games. I used to basically start a ton of games and finish next to none of them but in recent years I have forced myself to sit down and play through my backlog, one game at a time. Unfortunately for me, my backlog is over 1000 games long, so that means I rarely am able to justify purchasing anything new but I figure...

In the dynamic landscape of online gaming, players are increasingly pursuing diverse alternatives to UK-regulated platforms. One intriguing option lies within Richmond's non gamstop casino reviews , offering an unprecedented degree of liberty and adaptability to the gaming community. These casinos bypass the constraints of the GamStop self-exclusion scheme, which appeals to players seeking a mo...

Game : The Chinese Room 's Still Wakes the Deep Release Month : June Started : 24/12 Completed : 25/12 MerRig Christmas to oil, and to oil a good fright! So yeah, Still Wakes the Deep is a survival horror game set on an oil rig. The Chinese Room, they of Everybody's Gone to the Rapture and Amnesia: A Machine for Pigs (neither of which I cared much for but hey, I figure they're due), is behind t...

Game : Red Candle 's Nine Sols Release Month : May Started : 16/12 Completed : 23/12 Nine Sols is the newest game from Red Candle and, as a combat-heavy explormer , a bit of a departure for them, seeing as their last two were survival horror—the excellent Detention and perennial wishlist item Devotion —which is a genre usually a little less demanding in terms of battles and platforming. It foll...

I’m doing something slightly different with my list this year: I’m going to list games in the rough order that I played them (one might say an autobiographical ordering), rather than picking a ranked order. That’s simply because I was having trouble coming up with a ranked list that I felt good about. No one game (or couple of games) stood out to me as head-and-shoulders more enjoyable than the...

I am going to be up front, my Game of the Year 2024 thoughts will not end with a top 10 or even top 5 list. I will definitely have thoughts and opinions on some highlights for the year, but as you will discover this was a very strange year for me. In October I started working on a preliminary Game of the Year list, and realized I did not have that type of relationship with games this year. 2024...

Developed by Geometric Interactive , a studio founded by Jeppe Carlsen and Jakob Schmid formerly of Playdead (they of Limbo and Inside fame), Cocoon has you jumping in and out of other universes to follow its breadcrumb trail without a lick of dialogue or text, leaving you occasionally stupefied but, owing to its linear nature, never lost for long. As another big number rolls around for the Ind...

So... The Game Awards Sure Did Come And Go, And Somehow They Weren't The Worst Thing Ever Is anyone other than Keighley able to pull something like this off? It's been about a week since they happened, but the 2024 edition of The Game Awards came and went and was met with moderate, though tepid, praise. The event's proverbial host, Geoff Keighley, modified this year's structure in light of recu...

Hey, hey, you, you, you could be GOTY, hey, hey, you, you, I think you were pretty awesome. All right, folks, you know how this goes. Please bear in mind with my end-of-the-year things I never...

God damn it, who left this stick with the kids?!? (credit: IMDb) I didn’t do one of these last year for a couple of reasons. First, I barely had enough time to write my own list, and I hadn’t been super diligent on tracking what my kids were into throughout the year. Second, neither kid (4 years old and 1 year old at this time last year) seemed all that into gaming; I was prepared to make the B...

If popular culture is to be believed, I’m on the verge of a mid-life crisis! Today marks my 30th birthday, and while I’m somewhat happy about it—I do enjoy the attention and celebration—it feels different this year. As a teen or younger adult, I couldn’t imagine not going all out for my birthday. I’d plan nights out, meet people, get a little too drunk, and end the day in a cozy bed, maybe with...

Actually, this blog could just as easily be called “My month of tech upgrades,” since I bought all this stuff between mid-November and mid-December. However, “year” seems more appropriate since all but one of the devices I’m replacing has seen at least eight years of service. There are essentially two major reasons why I decided to buy all this stuff now. The first reason is one that I already...

I look forward to all the festivities celebrating our favorite video games every year, and one of my personal favorite such traditions is looking back on my favorite video game music from the year. We live in an era where video games by and large have wonderful soundtracks -- I'm blown away by their quality every year -- to the point where narrowing this list down to 10 is always a struggle. Ye...

Java 2 Platform, Micro Edition (i.e., J2ME), The Forgotten Titan Of Mobile Games Pre-iOS And Android This is an actual video game and this truly is the first thing you see after the developer's logo. Giant Bomb once was a bastion for everything Garfield, and if I can play a tiny role in rekindling that culture, then I know I made the most of the final weeks of 2024. Why would I be in a position...

Game : Double Dagger Studio 's Little Kitty, Big City Release Month : May Started : 16/12 Completed : 16/12 Time for something low-key to squeeze between two bigger games, and what better animal is there to fit through a tight gap than a cat? It was a backlog year. My game-playing went in a weird direction in 2024. At the outset, I was psyched for a trilogy of high-profile RPG releases. Once that high wore off, though, I found myself somewhat unmoored. New for this year, I set a purchasing limit to keep my backlog under control. It kind of (sort of) worked, but there was an unintended side effect. I was now scrutinizing every new re...

Game : MachineGames 's Indiana Jones and the Great Circle Release Month : December Started : 10/12 Completed : 15/12 In retrospect, I think the moment Indiana Jones and the Great Circle hooked me like I was a convenient whip grappling point sticking out the side of a building was seeing the subtitle "(fascistic whistling)" pop up for one of its many ambient enemy guard noises. MachineGames is d...

I've used Reddit off and on for a long time, especially since it is often the best place to go for specific information on games, but I increased my usage after other sources of information about my beloved Intellivision Amico dried up. Well what a good first blog post to begin on! Since no one is gonna read this, I am just gonna get right into these thoughts. Maybe I can do another blog post where I get into something cool, but right now, this one is for me! For as long as I can remember, I have wanted to be a writer. I was born with ADHD and generalized anxiety, and being a writer seemed like the best, coolest, most fun way to communicate my ideas the way I wanted, while avoiding the pitfalls of the kind of fame I wasn't really looking for. I found with my sardonic, deeply American-born-Jew-style humor, I was frequently misunderstood and my tone c...
