Manburgian Candidates 2024
Published Jan 21, 2025
The previous installment was a bit of a chaotic mess— which, in fairness, is completely on brand. Well, hopefully this one is a bit more of a comfortable read. Onward! — Starting the show with the showstopper: Game of the Year: Shadow of the Erdtree “can a expansion pack be the *Game* of the Year??” I mean, no truth but what we make baby, but yes: especially when it is the size of a complete st...

Go! Go! GOTY! 2024: Hauntii
Published Jan 20, 2025
Game: Moonloop Games 's Hauntii Release Month: May Started: 15/01 Completed: 20/01 The last two games on my GOTY docket for this (OK, last) year are both downers but then that feels thematically apropos given, well, *gestures vaguely around*. Hauntii at least provides a very memorable treatise about what it means to be deceased and how that we might, were our existence to persist somehow after...

Leaps and Bounds: The Design of Super Mario 3D World
Published Jan 19, 2025
Here's a question you might not like: Is Super Mario 3D World a 3D Mario platformer? It sounds open and shut. The acrobatics of Mario 3D World span three axes of movement, and it's an official platformer in the Mario series. Yet, here's another question that makes that argument sound less salient: Is every game in which we play some role an "RPG", or, despite the name, are RPGs only games that...

The (Supposedly) Worst Years in Video Game History: 1984
Published Jan 18, 2025
1984 was a year of contrasts in the gaming industry, especially from an international, multi-platform perspective. The year is defined by groundbreaking and quality games in multiple genres on the one hand, and lingering challenges from the 1983 crash on the other. Games like Elite, Knight Lore, "I, Robot", Kung-Fu Master, Pitfall II, King's Quest and Marble Madness showcased new gameplay and t...

Indie Game of the Week 403: Solar Ash
Published Jan 17, 2025
If there's one thing I can say about Januaries it's that they often feel like a giant black hole, from which nothing—not even light—can escape. Just a gaping void in the game release schedule as you huddle under a blanket for warmth and wait out the cold (or very hot, in certain parts of the world) weather to pass. It's in that saturnine atmosphere that I find myself playing Solar Ash , the mos...

2024: Ranking the Rest
Published Jan 17, 2025
Every year, I participate in ranking my top 10 video games of the year . Every year, I also play more than 10 video games. So, what of the rest of them? Here, in my annual “ranking the rest” writeup, is where I speak to those games, and thus the broader picture of my gaming year. As I wrote on my top 10 list, I think 2024 was a very good year for video games, with new releases I wanted to play...

Dragon Age Veilguard's director has left EA. The real problem with the game: It wasn't for anyone.
Published Jan 17, 2025
Dragon Age: The Veilguard's director is leaving EA . Obviously the discourse around the game has been ugly, with a lot of it focused around the anti-woke movement screeching with anger because it's not a game about straight white guys, for straight white guys, by straight white guys, as they think all games should be. Obviously I don't buy into the anti-woke narrative, but there is an actual cr...

2024's Best of the Rest

(Also some other stuff I forgot) Mine is European so all the logos are blue but you get the idea See? I fucking said there were too many goddamn video games in 2024, but did you believe me? Noooooo. Now look at what we’re dealing with! A follow-up! Mostly it’s just a couple games that came out in 2024, but I would be remiss if I did not also spill a little ink on some older stuff that I got Ext...

The (Supposedly) Worst Years in Video Game History: 1995
Published Jan 13, 2025
1995 was a pivotal year in the history of video games - a time of experimentation, technological transition and true innovation, but also one tarnished by growing pains and industry struggles. It was a defining moment for several genres like JRPGs, RTS, 3D Fighting and Racing, and Adventure, and a year with groundbreaking if not always well aged visuals and storytelling techniques. It also lend...

I finally finished Agent Intercept and I just don't know if I care about finishing games anymore
Published Jan 11, 2025
Agent Intercept is a game that I have a bit of a weird relationship with. I became aware of it through Youtubers the publisher gave free codes to upon its release, and it sat on my wishlist for a long time because I was interested in its sleek graphics and modern take on the Spy Hunter formula, but it was very short and I didn't want to pay full price. I bought it for $8 on Xbox at some point a...

Indie Game of the Week 402: Chants of Sennaar
Published Jan 10, 2025
Playing The Case of the Golden Idol last month has given me a craving for more abductive reasoning logic games and it just so happened Game Pass had another one on there by way of 2023's Chants of Sennaar by French studio Rundisc. Biblical scholars might recognize Sennaar, or Shinar, as a location featured a few times in the Old Testament as the southern part of Mesopotamia where the city of Ba...

The Worst Years in Video Game History: 1983
Published Jan 10, 2025
The year 1983 tends to be the setting for a cautionary tale in North American video game history - a time when groundbreaking innovation seems to have been overshadowed by industry turmoil. While games like Mario Bros. revolutionized platformers, Ultima III expanded the possibilities of RPGs, and some regions outside of the US saw growth or even thrived, the era is best remembered for the infam...

The Almost Didn't Happen List for 2024
Published Jan 9, 2025
This is a fun project in theory, but lately I've been struggling to find the motivation to write or do much of anything. I think that was also reflected in the games and other art I consumed throughout 2024. I started out strong, and you could clearly see my interest in just about anything wane as the year went on. This was the first year I actually struggled to put 10 games in the top listing,...

Hottest Mess 2024: Community Poll WINNERS
Published Jan 9, 2025
I'm pleased to also unveil the official Hottest Mess mascot (image source: Seth Rorabaugh) In a time of years, 2024 was certainly one of them. The year began with some optimism that things might not be as bad for the games industry as 2023, but that bright side attitude quickly gave way to even more layoffs and turmoil. There were bits of good news as well, and some great games even came out, b...
