We're back with the Mega Archive, a feature that deep (well...) dives into every release on the Sega Mega Drive/Genesis in chronological order while simultaneously sprucing up their wiki pages. I may be retiring or retooling this series when I eventually hit 1993, but I couldn't just abandon it right at the end of 1992 like this. Especially when December 1992 is such a significant month for Seg...

Blade Runner. Detroit. Mission: Impossible: Ghost Protocol. L.A. Noire. Toy Story 3. Heavy Rain. Blade Runner 2049. The Matrix. Terminator 2: Judgement Day. The Matrix Revolutions. Toy Story. Telltale's Batman: The Enemy Within. I thought about all these films and games while playing Detroit: Become Human this weekend, a game I've been sure I'd absolutely despise since it was announced, on thro...

I've always thought New Year's resolutions are pretty silly, but this year especially there's a much greater sense of urgency for change - a combination of the enthusiasm we collectively feel to distance ourselves from the last 12 months, with a desperate optimism that comes from knowing things need to get better. I currently live in Melbourne which, as of writing this blog, was home to the lon...

Honorable mentions Fuser -This thing might be a bad "game" the story and campaign ranges from uninteresting to actively bad, but these tools are truly amazing and are worth experiencing and playing with. Mortal shell -Just a good souls-like with some great ideas and execution. Bleeding Edge -I remain sad that Microsoft and ninja theory sent this out to die. Deep rock Galactic , Legends of Runet...

One of the side effects of discussions about Half-Life Alyx this year has been a forced reexamining of the series on my part. That’s a long-winded way of saying that I had never played the first Half-Life game until now, and I felt I needed to correct that. It’s one of those gaps in my video game history that I always knew I’d address someday, especially considering that the first-person shoote...

If you were wondering how the next hundred Indie Games of the Week would resume, a random explormer plucked from my Steam backlog is about as apt an indicator as any of how I intend to go on. Catmaze is very much a traditional dyed-in-the-wool explormer with a handful of major influences - Cave Story and the Castlevania Sorrow games - and a particular focus on Slavic mythology as a narrative ba...

AN: 2020 has been a terrible year for many people, and I want to avoid trivializing or being flippant about it at all costs. If anything written below contradicts this goal, please let me know and I’ll edit / remove it. I don’t remember what expectations I had for the gaming industry in 2020. This time last year, I had started a playthrough of Control , which I found equal parts brilliant and f...

A year unlike any other, 2020 was one of the strangest years on record. With a global pandemic raging, new consoles seemed like the thing furthest from what we needed but launch they did. While video games were not spared the impact of the pandemic the fact that there were so many good games released this year helped to pass the time. Both Microsoft and Sony released their new consoles: Xbox Se...

Ok here goes, so I beat 67 (this includes episodes of episodic games) number of games in 2020. Not my best which is still 108 back in 2016! So here go ratings with no comments for most parts; Pan-Pan 6/10 A Short Hike 9/10 Gato Roboto 8/10 Life is Strange 2 8/10 Jedi Fallen Order 8/10 Batman Enemy Within 7/10 Control 7/10 (this is actually a 9/10 game for me but played on OG Xbox One and it's h...

The last couple years I've enjoyed cataloguing all the games I play in a calendar year for two main reasons: It's kind of like keeping a gaming-centric journal that helps me reflect on what games I really enjoyed. It allows me to more easily frame what I think were my favorite gaming experiences of the year and feel more a part of annual Game of the Year conversations in a small way. But as I w...

Sorry this is a tad late, but between accidentally spending too much time re-ranking the factions of Total War Warhammer II and various Holiday-related hijinks, it took me a bit longer to put this out than I would've liked. Introduction I don’t feel like I need to express how bad 2020 was for a lot of reasons, between the world plague and the fascism, and the deep psychological scars that have...

I opened my game of the year post last year with a rambling preamble about how the year went, and looking back it's kind of nice to have an idea of how I felt about that 2019 from when it was still fresh in my mind, so I guess I should keep with the format and do another one. It probably shouldn't be surprising that I spent most of 2020 inside, semi-mindlessly playing video games and trying not...

I don’t play a lot of games when they’re new. I don’t tend to finish a lot of the games I do play, so this is also pretty much just a list of the stuff I finished this last year that aren’t Half-life 2 and Portal. The Top 10 games I finished for the first time in 2020: Honorable mention: Black Mesa - I ALMOST finished it then the full release came and wiped my save. I remember so much of Half-L...

Edited to add a game I completely forgot despite loving. If you want to avoid self-indulgent self-reflections, skip down to the list. Despite a global pandemic and it's ramifications on 2020, it was a crazy year for me that had very little to do with a pandemic. In fact, my life hardly changed at all. I work with production at a poultry plant, there's no working from home for me. In fact, being...

Honorable mentions go to Bioshock, Bioshock 2, and Fallout 3 because I have played those games before and beat. Except Fallout 3 which I finally beat this year, after losing my save over 10 years ago. Also played Minerva's Den for the first time really liked it, now on to the list! 28. Halo Halo’s campaign starts off strong and I thought it would remain open and nonlinear like the early levels,...
