    Campaign

    Concept »

Often used as a catch-all term for any game's main story-driven mode of play, campaign mode usually refers to a linear sequence of levels with a continuous story and a definite conclusion, playable single-player and sometimes co-operatively.

    Short summary describing this concept.

    Overview

Campaign (or Story) Mode is useful as a term to distinguish it from other modes of play that a game might offer, such as skirmish mode, one-off co-operative levels, competitive multiplayer modes, or other separate game modes that permute the high-level rules of the game while keeping the lower-level rules and mechanics consistent. Games that feature only one mode of play often leave that mode unnamed (implicitly or explicitly calling it simply, the "Game"), even though it often may technically qualify as a Campaign/Story Mode.
