The Boulder Dash Construction Kit was first released in 1986 for Commodore 64, and later for the Apple II, Atari 8-bit, Atari ST, DOS and Spectrum.

The Spectrum version released under the title Boulder Dash IV – The Game.

The game gives players access to tools allowing them to design, play, and share via cassette tape or diskette, levels for Boulder Dash.

It came with 15 pre-built levels to demonstrate the game and show the construction kits capabilities.

The game includes a comprehensive toolset featuring all items and themes required to build the levels in the full Boulder Dash game.

Some versions also allowed users to sequence levels together and save them to a cassette tape or diskette creating an early form of fan-made level pack.
