A self defense weapon. The asians were first to develop a fighting style based around it.

The bo, as it's primarily called, is probably one of the most basic weapons available, and also the most readily available out of all traditional weapons. Anything resembling a long stick can be used like a bo. One of the most interesting variations of the bo found in games/movies is Darth Maul's double edged light saber. While you cannot grip the edges of it, the fighting style greatly resembles that of Bo techniques.
