Overview
Battle Arena Toshinden 2 is a 3D fighting game developed by Tamsoft and released by both Takara and Capcom (Company) for arcades (using PS1-based Sony ZN-1 hardware) on November 24, 1995.
The only game in the Toshinden series to be released in arcades (and released in nearly the same time as its primary competitor, Soul Edge (Game)), Battle Arena Toshinden 2 builds upon the original Battle Arena Toshinden with revamped graphics, rebalanced 3D movement, a simple combo system, and the "Over Drive" gauge.
Set sometime after the original tournament, it is revealed that the tournament's organizer, Gaia, hosted the tournament to recruit warriors in order to overthrow the master of the Secret Society that he served. After Gaia's failure and excommunication, the Secret Society's second-in-command Uranus hosts a second tournament in the hopes of luring Gaia and the original challengers to their deaths.
The game later received a home Sony PlayStation release in Japan on December 29, 1995 (published by Takara), in North America on May 23, 1996 (published by Playmates), and in Europe on June 1996. It received an enhanced PS1 update for its budget Japanese re-release on August 9, 1996, where it was known as Battle Arena Toshinden 2 Plus. The Plus version was later digitally re-released by Tamsoft for some platforms as a PSone Classics title on November 22, 2016. It received a Windows PC port by Kinesoft on March 1996, featuring support for 3D accelerator cards and dial-up multiplayer. It was also used as the basis for the Sega Saturn side-story Battle Arena Toshinden U.R.A., which features changes to the roster, arenas, gameplay, and storyline.
