    Greek Mythology

He is portrayed as a being who relished war and destruction. He has an affair with Aphrodite and produces three children.

    God of War

Ares had a child from Alecto named Orkos so they can overthrow Zeus. Orkos wasn't fit for the task. Orkos and Aeltheia told Zeus that Ares and the Furies could overthrow Zeus. When Kratos was now old, he leads an army of his fellow Spartans in a losing battle against a large army of barbarians. Nearing death, he calls on Ares to save him, promising to do whatever the God asks of him if he should save his life. Seeing the potential of a warrior under his control in Kratos, Ares descended from the sky in the form of a giant and killed all of the barbarians and gave Kratos the Blades of Chaos by searing them to his flesh a permanent reminder of his obligation to the God of War, which he used to murder the barbarian leader. Afterward he served as the inspiration for Kratos to lead his army to victory after victory against the enemies of Ares namely the followers of his sister Athena. He then decided to have Kratos unknowingly murder his own family in order to allow him to become the ultimate warrior. Kratos swore revenge against Ares.

6 months later, Kratos was sent to a living prison by The Furies. Kratos learned the way to break ties with Ares is to kill the 3 Furies. Kratos learned that Orkos, Ares' son keeps oaths. Once Kratos killed Orkos, Kratos broke Ares' bond but suffered nightmares for the rest of his life. Over the next 10 years, Kratos worked with the other gods to get rid of his nightmares.

Ares wanted to end Athena's influence over the mortal world by destroying her patron city of Athens because he envyed her position with Zeus their father. His fellow Gods of Olympus sought to stop his conquest and they aided Kratos in his attempts to kill the God of War.

While Ares destroyed Athens, Kratos sought the only weapon with which he could be defeated: Pandora's Box. It contained the evils of the Great War. When Kratos obtained the box Ares killed him and had his minions steal the box. Kratos fights his way out of Hades with the aid of the mysterious gravedigger of Athens who delivers him to the Temple of the Oracle where Ares is laying waste and as Ares boasts to Zeus of his triumphs Kratos recovers Pandora's Box and ascends to Ares's level with the strength of a god he defeats Ares but not without losing the blades which Ares gave him and witnessing the death of his family again despite his success in saving them.

After Kratos becomes the new God of War Ares along with the Hydra and the Minotaur of Pandora's Temple become trophies of his victory beside his throne on Mount Olympus.
