I don’t get how people are upset that this game focuses on eight individual, personal stories instead of some large, overarching plot concerning stopping an evil force from destroying the world.

In my opinion, what Octopath is doing with its storytelling is fresh, and is kind of a strength of the game rather than a weakness?

I don’t need another final fantasy/kingdom hearts

Personal, character-driven stories are where it’s at, and if you think the characters in this game are flat, what the hell old-school JRPGs are you playing where the character writing is monumentally better?

You should check out the Saga series from Square because its clearly the influence here and all of them are non-linear pick a character's unique story type games.

@tary1966: The Atlus games are maybe a little more obvious (for this site), the Persona and Shin Megami Tensei series are fantastic games and more on the challenging side and Radiant Historia is a great handheld rpg with time travel mechanics they just re-released on 3DS.

For Falcom its basically their 2 big long running series, Ys which are action rpgs more in the style of Secret of Mana or Zelda but with the speed cranked up to 11 (I recommend The Oath In Felghana but you cant go wrong with any recent ones), and The Legend of Heroes games which are traditional turn based rpgs of which I would recommend the Trails in the Sky trilogy which you can get on PC relatively cheap as they are on sale often. The newer Trails of Cold Steel series (also legend of heroes) are also fantastic but the third and fourth games havent come out yet so its still incomplete.

@tary1966: No offense to the GB guys but honestly no I do not look to them for JRPG recommendations, that really should not be a big surprise since its not a genre they cover much or have many fans of on staff. I am not coming from a place of not liking rpgs and dissing them from a distance, I am a BIG fan of the genre but square enix's recent output has done little to nothing for me and to me this game does not appear to be shifting their strategy much at all. These days Atlus and Falcom are doing a much better job of keeping the genre alive with great games.

And Nier Automata wasn't the same studio as Nier, guess I shouldn't compare them even though its the same creatives in charge. Dragon Quest 1-5 arent the same devs as 6 and 7, and still another dev for 8 and 9, 11 is a new one as well.... guess I shouldn't compare those either.

Look I get it, not the same developer but its clearly the next game by the people who brought you the Bravely games.

@tary1966: Because I didn't like the Bravely games and this seems like more of the same I am suddenly a hater of old JRPGs.... ok. Who cares what the metacritic says, for me the games made by these people previously compare poorly to what they are trying to emulate.

@ryudo: "The project was started by producers Masashi Takahashi and Tomoya Asano, who previously headed the Bravely series. Acquire was chosen as development partner for the game based on their previous work on the What Did I Do to Deserve This, My Lord? series, which showed off their pixel art prowess."

Looks like the Bravely team made another one of their games: somewhat interesting mechanics, a distracting art style, super bland story/characters/world. I have never gotten the hype around their games, I am a huge JRPG fan but they have always bored me to tears. I'd also rather these games not try and mine my nostalgia and instead focus on a good plot or characters.

I guess Brad didn't see any Runner 2? That also had Charles Martinet doing the voice over.

@winsord: Kevin Durant is like 6'10" so he's at least as tall if not taller.

6'9" according to his NBA.com page. But I wouldntbe surprised if he was 6'6" or 6'7". The listed heights of NBA players often being a few inches taller than reality is basically an open secret. Sometimes they even lie to be shorter back when all 7' people were typecast as centers.

I get weirded out every time people refer to Takeshi Kitano as Beat Takeshi, I guess it depends on where you know him from originally? But that is his comedian standup name, which he hasnt really used in decades. I know him as the guy who starred in, wrote, and directed 2 of the best movies of all time in Sonatine and Hana-bi.
