Hey duders,
(NB: If this kind of forum topic isn't allowed, please let me know and I'll delete it!).
For the past 20 years, I've been a console only gamer. The last PC I used for gaming was an IBM 386, and the most I ever did with that was install DOS 6.0 and hook up an external sound card so that I could run Shadow of the Comet. Long story short, I'm old, and very, very out of touch with PC gaming.
As luck would have it, I recently came into possession of a Dell 7910 Precision Tower. It was primarily used for video editing, but I'm now looking to convert it into something that will run new and upcoming games at a decent spec (I don't want to be locked into the weird incremental upgrade path that the PS4 and X1 seem to be on).
None of my friends or family have any expertise in the area, so I thought I'd turn to the GB community to ask for help! I'd be super grateful for any advice, even if it's to just tell me I'm crazy and shouldn't bother - at least you'll be saving me money!
It's currently equipped with:
- CPU: Intel® Xeon® Processor E5-2623 v3 (3.0GHz)
- 8GB RAM
- GPU: Nvidia NVS 310, 1GB
Some basic research suggests that a decent, not horrendously expensive upgrade path might be to replace those components with:
- CPU: INTEL Core i7 4790K 4.0Ghz
- 16GB RAM
- GPU: Palit Super Jetstream GeForce GTX 1060, 6GB
My questions are:
- Is there anything totally dumb about what I'm planning?
- Are there any compatibility issues I should panic about?
- The motherboard has four PCIe slots, but is there any reason what I'm suggesting wouldn't work?
- There's no sound card installed - do I need one?
- Would this setup be fairly future-proof, or am I locking myself into anything that's going to be out of date soon?
- Anything else I should consider?
- I can't afford to do it all at once, so my plan was to go GPU>RAM>CPU, as that seems to be the order of priority
I'm not looking to break the bank and buy absolute cutting edge stuff, just spend what's needed to get me in a good place for modern PC gaming.
Again, really grateful for any and all advice! Thanks!
