Doom. Titanfall 2 is a real good time, but it was just a little too slow to get going for me. Some incredible moments throughout (especially that bit... and, uh, that other bit).

Doom, on the other hand, opens with you smashing a zombie scientist's skull into a bench and just does. not. stop. Rip and tear, until it is done.

Really just backing up what @paulmako, @haxdax and @barrock have already said. Diablo III is a great shout. Great, easy fun where everyone feels like they're contributing. Lego games too - we've had good times playing through Lego Avengers recently. And the Witness made us infuriated and delighted in equal measure.

Loved playing co-op through the original Gears trilogy back in the day too, though that took a little more practice time.

@fnrslvrand @zelyre: Hey, thanks very much to you both for your advice! From both your thoughts and @morello's, I've decided to get the 7910 up for sale and use the proceeds to fund a custom build that's more in tune with what I need.

Thank you all for saving me from a long, expensive and ultimately frustrating project!

@morello: Thanks - that's really helpful! The main thing I'm trying to avoid doing is buying stuff to find out that I can't actually use it, so this is gold... Cheers.

Hey duders,

(NB: If this kind of forum topic isn't allowed, please let me know and I'll delete it!).

For the past 20 years, I've been a console only gamer. The last PC I used for gaming was an IBM 386, and the most I ever did with that was install DOS 6.0 and hook up an external sound card so that I could run Shadow of the Comet. Long story short, I'm old, and very, very out of touch with PC gaming.

As luck would have it, I recently came into possession of a Dell 7910 Precision Tower. It was primarily used for video editing, but I'm now looking to convert it into something that will run new and upcoming games at a decent spec (I don't want to be locked into the weird incremental upgrade path that the PS4 and X1 seem to be on).

None of my friends or family have any expertise in the area, so I thought I'd turn to the GB community to ask for help! I'd be super grateful for any advice, even if it's to just tell me I'm crazy and shouldn't bother - at least you'll be saving me money!

It's currently equipped with:

  • CPU: Intel® Xeon® Processor E5-2623 v3 (3.0GHz)
  • 8GB RAM
  • GPU: Nvidia NVS 310, 1GB

Some basic research suggests that a decent, not horrendously expensive upgrade path might be to replace those components with:

  • CPU: INTEL Core i7 4790K 4.0Ghz
  • 16GB RAM
  • GPU: Palit Super Jetstream GeForce GTX 1060, 6GB

My questions are:

  • Is there anything totally dumb about what I'm planning?
  • Are there any compatibility issues I should panic about?
  • The motherboard has four PCIe slots, but is there any reason what I'm suggesting wouldn't work?
  • There's no sound card installed - do I need one?
  • Would this setup be fairly future-proof, or am I locking myself into anything that's going to be out of date soon?
  • Anything else I should consider?
  • I can't afford to do it all at once, so my plan was to go GPU>RAM>CPU, as that seems to be the order of priority

I'm not looking to break the bank and buy absolute cutting edge stuff, just spend what's needed to get me in a good place for modern PC gaming.

Again, really grateful for any and all advice! Thanks!

JS

I'm really enjoying it. I can see why some are finding it frustrating in terms of not really being able to influence the outcome of a match (I suspect DICE will be rebalancing Hoth a little to give the Rebels a chance, at least), but I've found that I'm getting a little better every game and now know how to make a contribution, however small.

To be honest, I expected this to be a wreck. I thought the quality of the graphics was going to have been vastly overstated, I figured that the servers would fall apart and that it would be a total glitch fest. So I've been very pleasantly surprised and have gone from being wholly skeptical to seriously considering buying this once I know how well the full game works. I'm a sucker for on point Star Wars stuff, and they've hit that nail right on the head.

@thefantasticfillip: Thanks for writing this all up - it's a great read and clarified some of the "wait... what?" points that have been circulating in my head (I finished the game a couple of hours ago). While I certainly don't hate the ending like so many seem to, I'm still left feeling a little empty by it (though I suspect that's more to do with the way the game was marketed than how it actually played out).

My only real regret is that the game doesn't signpost the way to the first Metal Gear well enough. I still can't quite reconcile how we go from Venom Boss leading Diamond Dogs to him hanging around Outer Heaven waiting to face Solid Snake, or how Big Boss builds a military nation in secret before rejoining FOXHOUND (or why). And I guess we'll never know...
