Not surprised by that although I will say reviewers seemed sick of scrolling shooters already in the last gen, and a bunch of them gave 2D or 2D-ish games lower scores just for not being 3D during this gen. Being story heavy and switching up the perspective seems like a good move at the time though.

Can't say much more without actually playing the game (I will), although visually it's certainly dated and it seems the ships sometimes blend in with the backgrounds. But hey I can get behind a 5/5 for the reason stated.

I generally make a short review (pros and cons list and some numbers at least) of what I play, based on the whole game unless it's in the 1-5/10 range, so yes. This tends to make playing through flawed games easier for me, whereas I'd drop everything but what I see as the greats otherwise.

I don't understand immediately dropping a game if I'm not having fun. I would probably drop every game at some point then.

"That's what I'm getting at when I say that 'shmup fans would probably be under-stimulated by this game and might not care about the transition gimmick or storytelling. Conversely, non-fans probably wouldn't get far enough in it to see anything of interest."

What makes you think there isn't a decent amount of people in-between these extremes?

I owned all three, and two TG-16, even though they both broke. Those things were fragile as heck.

Nice, I never knew about the PCE at the time. But I had the SMS, MD, GB, SNES, the GG and even the MCD around that time, while I also played Amiga and NES with friends and relatives. It was mostly just good times and we cared more about if the games were fun or not.

I remember the SMS being really sturdy, like I once dropped it down the stairs and nothing happened to it. Sadly I don't have the same copy anymore, I think we stupidly threw it out in the late 90s.

I like it but that's usually under the condition that I can use save states to control that boring repetition and you need some discipline to not start spamming them and not get better at the game.

It's like endurance challenges, which are also not for everyone.

Shoot 'em up fans didn't buy GA to just beat it easily, the point with most such games is to learn the whole game in detail. Not saying that's for everyone though (including myself, though it would be less interesting to just credit feed through it and if possible people would then complain about that instead of limiting themselves), there could've been a proper easy mode relative to other console games for practice. But there is a cheat to double the credits and the saturn mode is also a bit more forgiving.
