I make it clear on my site where I put my reviews that I use save states if I feel the need to to keep going with a game and that I generally don't use them excessively. I still play various newer games (and not necessarily easier ones, Hollow Knight or DKCR for example) without them, so I'd like to think I have a good idea of what a game would be like without them even if I did use them. I wouldn't say I beat the game in the same way as someone who didn't use them if there was a discussion like that, that would be dishonest.

When it comes to systems that I didn't play at all I try to check reviews and play other games to get a feel for what could and couldn't be done on that system.

There have been games where I wanted to play them on the actual system because emulation was obviously not as good, such as Parappa and Trauma Center (DS)

3 is both more important, impressive for its hardware and better balanced

Anything colorful with expressive characters and immediate visual and audio feedback to button presses is probably good. Not SNES but simple ipad games that let you sort things, colors, dress a character, open boxes or doors to find surprises and stuff like that could work.

Maybe you could play Wonder Project J with him, it's more complex but has nice animations. Or that Pac-Man adventure game

Various games in my top 10 aren't even rated on there, apparently.

Warcraft 2 is still a lot of fun, I replayed it a few years ago and all these dismissive comments surprised me. One of the best OSTs of its era. You're gonna have to put up with some clunkiness though, like the 9 units selection limit, some pathfinding issues in narrow areas, manually casting each spell, stuff like that.

Warcraft 3 feels pretty modern, with several quality of life improvements, frequent scripted events and cutscenes during the campaign, and the RPG elements might make it more accessible for you. I personally prefer the 2D engine (it's easy to tell how big everything is and what will pass through what as well as get a clear overview of what's happening at any point) and speed of Warcraft 2 though.

Warcraft 1 though is very rough, you might wanna just check out the cutscenes or a retrospective video for that one.

Kinda, the cheat codes were put there by the developers. :)

That's fair but it's worth mentioning other options at least if they did make the game enjoyable for you.
