Like senior Gerstmann, I'll be looking forward to whatever new product will come of all of this. Shake-ups like these sometimes have a greater purpose.
Infinity Ward
Company »
Founded by ex-2015 employees, Infinity Ward is a game development company known for its highly acclaimed Call of Duty franchise.
Something happened at Infinity Ward
activision: "right, so youll make Russian Civilian Zombies mode and sell it for 10 bucks a pop, its brilliant"
IW: "err...no?"
activision: "no....no? I dont know this word...what does this mean"
IW: "it means we won't make that stupid shit"
activision: "oh silly IW president... do you not know that you are speaking to...GOD"
Double Fine's Tim Schafer, who had his own troubles with Activision over the release of Brutal Legend, recently commented on Twitter about what's happening between Infinity Ward and Activision.
"Getting mad at Activision for this kind of thing is like getting mad at an ape for throwing feces," said Schafer. "It's just how the beast communicates."

Seems like a perfectly reasonable course of action to me, Jason West didn't do his job to the standards expected by Activision, he was let go. It isn't pleasant (this sort of thing rarely is) and it is indeed unsettling to see relations between IW and Activision are rocky. But Activision owns IW and this is all business, at the end of the day Activision has profits to make and employees to keep in jobs, if certain folks at IW aren't towing the corporate line then they naturally don't need to be apart of the corporation anymore. It's simple business :)

Exactly. If this leads to Infinity Ward literally tearing apart or losing a good amount of it's talent (that talent creating one of the most well-recieved and profitable franschises ever), this is hardly reasonable. It crossed the line with the whole bouncer business.
" @Marz: I think that was already happening. I even think that's what Infinity Ward wanted... well, maybe after a MW3 (aren't there some major story loose-ends in MW2?). I think they want to move on to something else. "there have been rumors prior to this that activision brought in a separate team to work on mw3....

I lol'd when I read that.
" @zudthespud: Easy answer is to make sure that no one in the company gets any devious ideas. Keep in mind Activision owns Infinity Ward and that means they have financial interest in the assets created, stored and produced at the IW office. "I can kind of get it, but I thought all the shit people shout at Activision was just trolling, I knew they were pretty evil and close minded but this seems a little extreme even for them. We need to find out why they got fired, then I will be able to make some proper conclusions.
well i just assume it's about the third studio that activision thought about bringing in to make more COD games. and IW probably wanted to finally make something else or make modern warfare games themselves. i guess now a lot of those guys will quit, open up a new studio and make a new hit game. just like they did after quitting 2015 (i hope so).
good luck IW.
I'll tell you one thing. This makes any of tension that existed between Bungie and Microsoft seem like a kiss on the cheek.
" Clearly a publicity stunt to take away some of the media's attention to BC2. ---l--- "Ahhh so you where wrong about a publicity stunt. Seems people are gettin the boot.

"Here I would normally retort by saying something sarcastic, like; sure it's smart business to piss off the people that buy your games. But as MW2 evidenced, people will support this kinda bs by buying games they publish. Luckily, I'm one of those rare few that isn't giving Activision a penny of my money, no matter how good the game.
Anybody else finding Kotick to be a hypocrit this coming just after his little "I'm no empire but rebel" speech?

But this wasn't security escorting anyone. This was some top level employees going to a meeting, not coming back, and then a bunch of "bouncer looking guys" showing up and standing around." Isn't sending security to escort dismissed (fired) executives out of the premises a company standard? I still hate activision, but i don't see why people are latching on this. I hope they go to EA just out of spite. "
Also, the HR thing about "breach of contract" and "insubordination" sounds like lawyer-speak for "didn't do what they were told". However, what they were told, we may never know for sure. Seems the consensus theory is "we want to drive CoD/MW into the ground with annual releases, like we do with all our franchises, and you're going to play along with that, yes? No? Ok, get out." Or at least some variation on that theme (bringing in a third studio to help crank out them CoD games more often, refusing to let IW do something else, etc).
Actually, now that I think about it, if things have been "tense" for a while, and there's this rumored "third studio", and Jason West, Chief Technical Officer, was fired...this sounds like Activision was demanding the engine/code/assests from MW2 so that "Studio 3" could get to work on MW3, and the IW guys were refusing. Also would explain the sending of bouncer/security to the IW offices, make sure nobody takes anything or sabotages anything or something crazy - not that anyone would, but if the CTO was just let go for not handing over technical assets, I could see why Activision would want to make sure. Very interested to see what the fallout will be with this...
" Isn't sending security to escort dismissed (fired) executives out of the premises a company standard? This ain't Brazil, dude.
I love how people are making light of others losing their jobs. This is pretty much bullshit.
But in some weird way, I'm happy. Maybe they will break off (again) and start a new, better company. It is obvious that Activision's is influencing them in a negative way.
COD was the only franchise that I have bought from Acitivion, If they decide to fire the team that was a main part of why Activision is swimming in money, then there will be massive boycotts. It won't be too effective, since casuals don't know the difference between a good COD game (IW) and a bad one.
I've been digging around on this story since last night, having not really known too much about the relationship between the 2 companies previously. Maybe some of you have seen this already, but here's a story from last year about Activision not wanting IW to do a "modern" shooter in the first place. Sheds some light on the current situation, maybe...

Regardless of whether this was sound business thinking and a long time coming the way it's being portrayed in the the gaming media is going to be damning. Even more mind boggling is this all comes around a week after Kotick referred to himself as "Being in command of the Death Star" at DICE last week and lamenting letting several profitable endeavors like Rock Band and The Sims slip away. At the very least Infinity Ward has lost their leadership and from the way things sound the natives are restless. Even if Activision isn't hurting for money at the moment losing the majority of Infinity Ward is going to hurt in a major way.
On a personal note I've been rooting for EA rather heavily in recent years (yeah, I feel dirty) and the prospect of DICE and former Infinity Ward employees working on Medal of Honor or Battlefield makes me kind of giddy. Still, it's never nice to see someone lose their job.
Kotick is up and about, I must say...
Can't wait to see what the end of this will be! -Maybe next weeks bombcast will include West and Zampella. :D

Man... this is chaos... like a soap opera for gamers. First the Y2K bug hits the PS3... then the craziness at Activision/IW... what will happen next?
I predict EA will have a baby with Blizzard... but Activision is jealous that their developer is with another publisher, and will attack blizzard... but they will actually hit Valve, who will go into a coma, and then awake 3 months later with amnesia!
Ironic thing is regardless of the quality of the games, people will still buy the annual CoD release for at least the next 2 years. They have enough good will for that franchise.
Gotta love Tim Schafer.
You know what the SEC is serious business and they don't mess around with the allegations that Activision is levying against Infinity Ward. If Activision's evidence is concrete, which it looks like it is, then the heads of Infinity Ward should be fired. However if Activision is using the SEC to threaten and push out the heads of Infity Ward then I hope Bobby Kotick gets burned on the stake.
