Formerly known as "Project Century."
Stranger than Heaven spans 5 different cities and eras within Japan:
An action adventure game where the main character is Makoto Daito, a Japanese boy born in America in the late 1800s. After suffering from the racism and discrimination of that era, and seeing his mother die, Makoto is forced to choose between toughing it out in California, or returning to his ancestral home that he never knew in Japan. He decides to stow away on a ship from San Francisco, bound for Fukuoka, Japan. However, he finds another stowaway named Yu Shinjo. The two of them are caught by the ship's captain, a smuggler named Orpheus, who threatens to throw them both overboard, until they bargain their way out of trouble.
However, having arrived in Japan with no money and no real connections beyond their heritage, the two men struggle to find their way in their new home. Yu is able to find a position with a Western-influenced family where his ambitions grow, while Makoto scrapes together a living working for Orpheus. The two of them split up as their ideals clash, but years later, reunite in their struggle to create a place for people like themselves in this land.
As the years go by, Makoto finds interest in pursuits like playing piano and singing, but is convinced by his colleagues to become a Showman, or producer of other entertainment acts.
