Spike's Peak is a Xonox game, sold usually as one side of a "double ender" cartridge, but later on its own. The object of the game is to control Spike, a mountain climber, through multiple stages to reach the to of a mountain.
The game screen's top portion consists of the total score, and a body temperature indicator, which shrinks as Spike gets closer to death. If the body temperature gauge runs out before Spike reaches the peak, a life is lost. Spike has three lives.
There are three difficulty levels and five stages of gameplay.
The first stage is an overview map. Flags indicate the number of lives remaining, and a dot indicates the highest Spike has made it (on previous lives).
The meadow is a zig-zag route populated by dangerous bears. Spike can take cover in canyons or caves if a bear approaches, and must also take cover if an eagle attack is imminent (an eagle cry alerts the player). Body temperature rapidly decreases while hiding. Additionally, Spike must jump over a stream.
Spike must locate and use a piton to climb up a ledge while avoiding boulders, rocks, and a cactus. Additionally, there are gold nuggets to collect for a higher score.
The ice cap is another zig-zag path which the abominable snowman follows. The player is not bound to the path, but must cross it several times. Spike can find an ice axe to plant firmly to avoid falling due to avalanches, and can kill the abominable snowman with it as well.
Finally, Spike has reached the top of the mountain and can plant a flag for a very large bonus. If any lives are remaining, the player may attempt to climb from the start while adding to the previous score.
