Morenatsu
An adult furry dating sim which began development on 2ch in 2003, only to face numerous team changes, disappearances, and attempted revivals.
Overview
Morenatsu (or “Summer Break”) is a dating sim/visual novel led by the furry artist Gamma-G and later by the Morenatsu Team. A free dating sim featuring anthropomorphic animals, Morenatsu is aimed towards adult homosexual audiences. Development first began from concepts posted to 2ch's Kemono (furry) board, quickly gaining traction due to positive community response. While originally intended to release in Summer of 2004, the game was pushed back several times due to development issues. The original version of the game continued development throughout the late-2000s to mid-2010s. A prototype of the game was released in November 2007, to which several character routes were eventually added before development was ceased in 2015, with three routes left unfinished. In 2017, fans of the game made an attempt at reviving the project under the title Homecoming: Morenatsu Revisited, developed in English, unlike the Japanese original. The game is about Hiroyuki Nishimura (a human in the original, a snow wolf in Revisited), traveling back to his home town (The Waterfront), after five years away, to spend the summer break with nine of his furry friends. These friends include Torahiko Ooshima (Character) (a tiger), Tatsuki Midoriya (Character) (a dragon), Juuichi Mikazuki (Character) (a bear), Kounosuke Kuri (Character) (a raccoon dog), Kouya Aotsuki (Character) (a husky), Kyouji Takahara (Character) (a Labrador), Shin Kuroi (Character) (a cat), Shun Kodori (Character) (a wolf), and Soutarou Touno (Character) (a lion). The game focuses on one character at a time, usually leaving the other eight characters as friends/filler. The player chooses which of the friends to play as, with Hiroyuki Nishimura always sitting with the player at the welcome home dinner on the first day.
Gameplay
This consists of the usual dating simulation gameplay, reading text with icons of the characters reacting to the choices the player chooses through the game. After the first day, and before the game concentrates on the chosen character, there are several areas of the Waterfront to hang out with the nine main characters (and others). Often times whom the player hangs out with, or what they do, does not matter. But between one and several days, the player needs to hang out with the character they want to date to get the good ending. It is safe to stay with that character every day that they are displayed on the map. Sometimes the character is not listed in any areas so it is safe to hang out with other characters.
Game Length
The game takes place over the course of 30 in-game days (albeit skipping a few days), starting with the welcome home party, hanging out/filler/character development, beach party, more hanging out/filler/character development, camping, and then the story diverges from the others to focus on the character the player is dating. The sexual scenes only happen after the group goes camping. The game can last about 3 to 15 hours; depending on the amount of content and more importantly how fast the player can read. Many of the characters have multiple endings, with each character's good ending typically resulting from picking the most obvious answer during dialogue choices. However, some characters instead vary their expected response. The game was originally distributed via the game's official website, however the website has gone offline since the original team ended development. Revisited can be obtained directly via the Revisited team's itch.io page.
