Overview
Greyhat - A Digital Detective Adventure is a narrative-driven hacking simulation techno-thriller game developed and published by Limited Games for PC (Platform). It is currently slated for release on the 31st of August 2020 on Steam (Concept). In Greyhat, the player assumes the role of a legendary elite hacker with the skills and abilities to infiltrate and steal data from any computer. Their reputation allows them to earn a living through performing various hacking jobs for third parties, earning them large amounts of cryptocurrency. One day, the player completes a job that inadvertently makes them a target for some dangerous people. The player ends up paying the ultimate price, and their family is irreparably broken. To right this injustice, the player must hack into various computers to steal information, expose corruption, solve puzzles and save lives, all while inching ever closer to solving their own nightmarish mystery.
Gameplay
Greyhat is played from the perspective of desktops. The game simulates the player's home desktop, as well as the desktops of the targets the player is hacking into. To hack a computer, the player must discover their target's IP address before using the TunnelFox application to perform a scan for their target's computer. Once found, the player must complete a Tunneling mini-game that earns them passage into the target computer.
Once they've successfully infiltrated the target's computer, the player must look for clues to complete the specific objective of that level. Players are typically tasked with piecing together clues, looking for password hints, unlocking secure folders, spying through the computer's webcam, and reading their target's emails. Many of these elements are randomized at the start of each level.
The game features a wide array of different objectives, including:
- Stealing corporate secrets from a pharmaceutical giant
- Stopping a terrorist attack by correctly identifying the explosives to be used
- Identifying a comatose foreign spy by hacking a hospital database
- Stopping a nuclear attack from a rogue nation
- Exposing the identities of hundreds of closeted Neo-Nazis
- Manipulating the city's traffic grid to stop a criminal from escaping
The game also features:
- Collectibles in the form of cryptocurrency, chapters of a story-within-a-story, desktop wallpapers, and poetry
- The ability for players to name their own character and choose their gender, as well as apply different profanity filters
- Randomized clues, passwords and solutions that make it unlikely for any two play-throughs to be the same.
