Plot

The Doctor is a sad and lonely God, searching for meaning in his empty existence. To feed his ego and alleviate boredom, he creates a game show called the Obliteration Game, which is compulsorily broadcast to every citizen in the galaxy. The game explores a single episode of the Obliteration Game

and the player controls all three contestants who must try to survive to the end of the show.

Contestants are told that by collecting Saviour Stones and completing the challenges in the game zones, they can win fantastic prizes including superior advanced technology which will help to advance their worlds by thousands of years. But it soon becomes clear that this is another ruse, because the Doctor wants to collect and shrink their planets for his own obsessive private Planetarium Collection. If the player does not collect all the Saviour Stones, then they still lose and their worlds will be obliterated.

The story of the Doctor’s search for meaning in his life is told through each of the game levels. Each game zone contains a different philosophical lesson for the Doctor, in which he learns increasingly more about himself through arguments with this pet space hen called Eggloot, who only speaks in rhyme, and who tells him some very harsh truths about himself.

Gameplay

The gameplay involves solving puzzles in a 3D platform environment, where players control three individual characters who are all contestants in a cosmic game show, who must work together to avoid traps, complete physics based puzzles and collect pieces of planets known as Saviour Stones, in order to complete the game. The player must manage and switch between characters in order to progress through each of the fifteen game zones. Each character has a special power, which can be used together in different ways in order to solve the puzzles. The game also features collectables which subsequently unlock skins for each of the characters.

As the player progresses through the game zones, new puzzle aspects are introduced along the way, including yellow blocks that can be pushed, tesla drones that must be avoided, force-fields of different colours requiring different solutions to unlock them, laser beams which can be utilised to unlock switches, bouncing platforms that the player can use to move characters around.

The Obliteration Game also has a map editor which is playable on Windows PC desktop or in VR by using the HTC Vive, and this has been integrated into the Steam Workshop so that players can upload and share their own maps.

History

2950806-og-06302017-0046.jpg

The Obliteration Game is the creation of Rich and Lin Bang from Freekstorm, a husband and wife development team based in the U.K. The origins of the game go back as far as 2008, when they released a short animated film Doctor Kvorak Destroyer of Worlds which was an entry into a small film festival.

The film resulted in the idea of continuing the story of the Doctor in the form of a game, and the developers continued to work full-time on the project from 2010 onwards. Because the game was self funded, all aspects of the Obliteration Game were developed in-house, including assets, story, audio and gameplay. The only exception was the narrator of the story, which was voiced by Rosko Lewis.
