A fast-paced score-attack remake of the obscure 1981 NEC PC-8001 "type-in game" Alien Field.

Overview

Alien Field 3671 is a deliberately-retro maze game developed and published digitally by Mindware for the PC on December 19, 2018. The eighth game in the studio's "Video Game Classics" series, Alien Field 3671 is a remake of Alien Field, a NEC PC-8001 game created by Keita Mizukami as a "type-in game" for the May 1981 issue of the Japanese microcomputer magazine Mycom BASIC Magazine. This version also includes the PC-8001 original as well as an "arranged" PC-8001 version (with additional levels and enhancements). The goal of the game is to navigate (in a turn-based system, similar to the 1980 game Rogue) a procedurally-generated maze full of gems, aliens, and energy canisters. Players get points for collecting gems and must avoid aliens that aggressively pursue them. Energy canisters grant the player temporary invincibility that eliminate aliens that touch them. In the "3671" version, the game is played in real-time and can be played co-operatively (for up to two players). Players are given a cannon for shooting aliens, a special high-speed dash maneuver, and new special power-ups. Similar to Heiankyo Alien 3671, this mode is played in a "score attack" scenario, where players have infinite lives and must get the highest score (taking advantage of a new score multiplier system) in three minutes. In addition, this version features new pixel-art graphics and chiptune music. The game received a limited-edition physical release with an interview DVD, a bonus cassette tape (with one side having the original PC-8001 game and the other having the soundtrack used for the "arranged" PC-8001 version), and a booklet containing a reprint of the Alien Field section of the May 1981 issue of Mycom BASIC Magazine.
