Once again, I didn't get to my blog this week until basically the end of the week... Next week, I will post this early in the week and hopefully keep up that trend!! Also, I'll admit that some of the text below is duplicated from my Games I Completed in 2014 list. I didn't really feel I had something different to say on those games, at this point. Since, I'm not currently trying to give any full reviews or critiques of the games, these short blurbs give enough of my basic thoughts on the games. :)
My Week in Gaming 7/7-7/13
I am finally getting close to finishing this. It is probably twice as long as I'd like it to be, mainly due to a lot of repetitive actions, backtracking, and completely obtuse puzzles. I'll honestly be glad to finish it.
I hate to say it, but Jazzpunk was a huge letdown for me. I expected something crazy and fast paced, but I got a very buggy game that I didn't feel was paced very well, especially when it slowed me down with collecting random things instead of just pushing me through the crazy sets and actual gameplay. I know this game is already short, but I think it should have been shorter and never gave the player the opportunity to do any one thing too long.
I have played a couple visual novels, and I want to play more. I have an idea for my own game that could either be a visual novel or adventure game. So, I want to do more "research" on visual novels to make the decision on which would fit my idea best... I recommend Juniper's Knot to anyone that has 45 minutes and is interested in visual novels (it's free, too).
Last week, I actually played Limits & Demonstrations and The Entertainment, two stand-alone stories in the Kentucky Route Zero "universe" made by the same people. Kentucky Route Zero is one of a few games that I've played and immediately wished I had been the one that created it, as it resonated so deeply with me. I love the atmosphere and the abstractness of the experience while all feeling very impactful, at the same time. The two stand-alone stories are not great, but they are free and are worth checking out if you're already a fan of KR0. I don't think I'd suggest using these as a demo, though, because they really aren't as good and might turn someone away from trying the real game.
The last episode was a bit of a letdown for me, but I thoroughly enjoyed this game, as a whole, even more than The Walking Dead seasons. I just really loved the setting of The Wolf Among Us and got into the noir-style rough cop, solving a mystery, making tough choices story. I would highly recommend this game to anyone. I am pretty sure it will end up on my Top 10 list for this year...
