Figuring out 2v2

by shinji_rarenai

I haven't played any 1v1 games recently. Jason, my roommate from college, started playing more, so we've been playing more 2v2 games. I haven't played any 1v1 games recently. Jason, my roommate from college, started playing more, so we've been playing more 2v2 games. He watched the Day[9] videos I sent him, as well as tried to do some of it on his own. I think it's working out okay, but it's a lot of work.

The new patch came up, but I didn't get the chance to play a 1v1 game. I finally played some 1v1 games last night. The first game, I was Terran versus a Zerg opponent on Jungle Basin. I was sort of tired, and I don't think I started out well. I walled in, but then I really turtled and put no pressure on my opponent. When I started to push out, I realized he already had either three or four bases to my one. I knew it was over, but kept playing. He massed mutalisks, and there wasn't much I could do. I tried to expand to my natural expansion, but I ran out of minerals. It wasn't close. He was a silver division player.

The next game, I did better. It was a Zerg vs. Zerg on Delta Quadrant. I opened with a spawning pool on 13. Since I scouted him at the cross map position, I decided to fast expand to the minerals in front of my base. My scout died before I could see the second building that he morphed as his base. I assumed it was a roach warren. I had some zerglings that I used to monitor the center of the map, as well as the front of his ramp. When he pushed forward, I saw that he had a lot of zerglings. I started pumping out some myself, but I was short on larvae and minerals because I was still getting my expansion up. When I tried to defend my base, I saw that he had banelings. Uh oh. I wasn't prepared. Luckily, I had morphed a couple of spine crawlers when I saw that he had more zerglings than I did. He attacked with lots of banelings, but I didn't lose as many drones as I thought I would. The drones had times to run away, and the spine crawlers picked off enough banelings that I managed to survive. Most of my drones' health bars were red, so another attack probably would have seriously hurt my economy. The metabolic boost finished upgrading when his second wave hit. I managed to hold of the wave of zerglings, and I also saw the morphing banelings that he tried to hide to the side of my base. I picked those off before they finished morphing. He gg'ed. I think my micro helped win this game. It was really close. I didn't look at the replay yet, but I'd be interested to see how much of his economy he sacrificed to attack like that. Did he even see my expansion? He was a gold player.

My third 1v1 game was also on Delta Quadrant. I drew Terran against a Terran opponent. I decided not to wall off, so that my buildings would be closer to my command center. My SCVs would spend less time walking, so they'd be gathering slightly more minerals. When I scouted, I saw that he walled off, so I went for a medivac build. I made a few mistakes, but I think the build went rather well. I had two medivacs worth of marines and marauders, and flew them around the side of his base while I continued to build more units back at my base. My drop arrived right as he started upgrading the command center at his natural to a orbital command. I picked off a lot of SCVs and was wondering when his army would arrive to defend. I marched toward his ramp and was hit by siege tank fire. I stimmed, ran up the ramp, and target fired the tanks. I lost units, but took out two of his tanks. A third one started attacking and was taken down quickly. I think the medivacs healing my strike force really made the difference. I did a lot more damage than I should have. He gg'ed. When I looked at the replay, I was surprised. My opponent was spamming at the beginning of the game, and his APM was somewhere around 150. I'm nowhere near that fast. As I watched the replay, though, I saw that my macro was better than his. His buildings were idle sometimes, and I had more SCVs than he did, even before my drop. I still need to work on my handspeed to get that fast, but it'd good to know that I can still beat someone that is that fast.

After that game, I played some 2v2 games with Jason. I think we found a good strategy. He plays Protoss, so he builds a lot of zealots. I build support units - mostly marines with stimpacks. We join forces between our bases, and then push out. It seemed to work okay. We won one game because one of the opponents dropped, and then we placed 12th in Bronze. We played a few more games and won 2 of them. We made it to 2nd place.

I think we have a working strategy. His macro is definitely a lot better, too. It showed when we played a random team. They built four gateways each, but didn't have the probes to power them all at first. When we pushed out, we had more units producing than they did. Our micro needs work. They kited his zealots a lot, so I researched concussive shells for my marauders to slow down the stalkers. Jason also researched charge. It worked okay, but we still have holes in the strategy. I think he probably has a lot of vespene gas collected, so he either needs to make sentries, observers, or upgrade his armor more quickly. I guess that's something that we can iron out later. At any rate, it'll be interesting.

I haven't noticed any differences with the patch yet, but I also haven't played as Protoss or against Protoss much. I assume that quicker phoenixes and the void ray changes will affect the game, but so far, I'm not sure how. It'll be interesting to find out.
