Time for Spore Impressions, Not So Good

by scorched

Ok so Spore... *sigh*. A disappointment, I've found the game to be. So the only thing really here is the editor tools, online features, and the space stage. Which don't get me wrong, that's still a lot of good stuff, but ya know all the other stages are kind of so so. I guess I'll do a little run through. Btw I've made a pretty thorough analysis of the first four stages because of their shortness in length.  I've played them a variety of ways.

Cell Stage:

So the cell stage, this is like flow with an editor.  You can be a herbivore, carnivore, or eventually an omnivore.  This affects what you go into the creature stage as, but appearance is not affected at all by any stage.  You can be a completely new creature whenever you mate in the cell and creature stages, so that's pretty much it for the cell stage.  It took me about 10mins to beat each time.

Creature Stage:

so this is like the scocialize with other creatures or kill them.  You can be a prediator, social, or adaptable.  I first played a predator style and have to say it's probably harder than social, but there isn't much of a game here.  You get an appreciation for your creature because your interacting with him but pretty much you go around fighting or socializing with other creatures.  You have a variety of attacks to use based on what your creature is.  The combat is similar to that of an rpg where you wait for skills to charge befor reusing them and basically you just spam keys, and social you sing, dance, pose, or charm.  You find parts for your creature throughout the world and by interacting with creatures.  You will also sometimes get hungry, so you just kind of find food and eat.  I wasn't too impressed with this stage either.

Tribal Stage:

:So you fight other tribes or make them your allies by performing for them in a really dumb mini game.  This stage and Civilization stage feel so thrown in.  Probably my two least favortie stages.  You just kind of throw units at each other if you're agressive and if social you play music in a dumb mini game.

Civ Stage:

Throw units at the enemy's cities.  Gather resources.

Space Stage:

So this is the game.  Spore is actually sim galaxy.  Why couldn't the work that went into this also have gone into the other stages.  This stage is just so complex.  Although I do not feel that I have fully experienced it yet.  Expect more impressions later.  This stage has so much though.  Altough some missions become repetitive this stage is very interesting and deep.  There are so many things to do in it from terraforming, to conquering and colonizing other planets, to finding treasure, to establishing trade routes, making allies and enemies.  Just soo much.  This is the game.

Overvall Impressions:

So overall the game is dissapointing to me, as you could probably tell from my comments on some of the stages.  I'm really enjoying the space stage though.  Even though multiple times I've lost my progress.  I'm talking about hours lost, and it's still been fun.  Who knows it could get repetitive though.  I'll have to play with it some more.  Now the real achievement of this game is the simple complexity of the creature creater and the online interactions in the game.  It's like playing a single player MMO.  You always find unique creatures and structures coming from other people and sometimes even your own things.  I once saw an epic version of one of my creatures stomping around a city, and that was fun to see.  So the game is really cool.  It just could have been so much more.  Well anyway I'm going to move on to some other stuff.  If I'd have to sum up my opinion of the game in a number it would be about a 7.8.  Still a great game, not what I, or we, were hoping for.

Other Stuff

So I'm sure many of you have heard of Dr.Horrible's Sing-Along Blog.  Well I'm kind of late to the party but just this weekend I saw all 3 acts and wow!  What an amazing musical!  I'm normally not the one to enjoy musicals but I really enjoyed this.  It's a great story with plenty of laughs, great songs, and a heart breaking ending.  Just wow!  Go check it out.  I really wasn't expecting as much as I got, but man it was so amazing.

Well enough of that.  Stalker: Clear Sky today.  I plan on maybe buying it tomorrow even if I can't play it.  So maybe, hopefully my impressions will be up by next Saturday.  Also Rock Band 2. tomorrow.  I'll probably be having another party to celebrate the release of it, and Rock Band parties are always fun.

Well that's all I've got right now.  Make sure too comment, I want to hear your thoughts on my thoughts, tell me if you dissagree or agree, or just I don't know tell me something, I don't even really care if it's relevant.  Anyway check back Saturday for more.  Scorched out.
