Game Of The Year?*About the VGAs*

I just finished watching the utterly dissapointing Spike VGAs(made entertaining by Joystiq Video-cast featuring the McElroys), and i must say, Grand Theft Auto...Game Of The Year? Really?...is that the best we can do?...Grand Theft Auto 4...Instead of awarding the GOTY to a game that did something different..(maybe LittleBigPlanet?) they decided to award the most Iterative game on the list, eve...

Really?...is that the best we can do?...Grand Theft Auto 4...Instead of awarding the GOTY to a game that did something different..(maybe LittleBigPlanet?) they decided to award the most  Iterative game on the list, even more so then Gears Of War 2 (INB4 PS3 Fanboy).  I admit, i enjoyed Grand Theft Auto 4 as much as the next guy...but the game(IMHO) is not GOTY material. The big problem with me in the game, was how Nico seemed to be such a caring person, that wanted to change his life around so much, but as soon as he is given a choice, he starts killing people.   So, sales figures determine who gets awards now?...wait...i guess its always been that way.

Now onto the actual show, better then last years, the writing seemed a bit better, and there were a few flubs, but still, the best Spike VGAs so far.  But i tend to agree with what Griffin McElroy said,  It seems like Spike is embarrassed to be doing the VGAs, and think they need to bring in boatloads of celebrities to get people to watch, when there is a built in audence already, and if they  just took it seriously, gamers would watch it. Brutal Legend looks like (supprise) a metal-themed Psychonauts, with Jack Back, and Rob Halford doing voices. God Of War 3 looked.....like God Of War 3 should look, although it didnt show anything that looked like game-play(like Brutal Legend did). Uncharted 2 looked good, and Busta Rhymes assured us that it was In-Engine(also showing no gameplay).  Although i'll admit i'm not a huge Gears fan, the new maps look good(AVAILABLE NOW! Go get 'em if you haven't already).  But by far, the most dissapointing part of the show was the seeming 20 awards they gave out in a bumper before the commerical break. Best Graphics and Sound(MGS4), Best Wii Game(BoomBlox), and Best Handheld Game(Professor Layton) all were "given out" in .5 seconds.

The  best Indie game was a dissapointment also,  World Of Goo, while awesome, is not the Best Indie Game, Braid Anyone?, Audiosurf with its infinate replayability? C'mon guys! There were WAY better choices.

TL;DR:  an average awards show, that had major dissapointments in the awards and presentation department.
