It's time for the semi-provocative listblog thing!

I will never understand why people like these games

For the most part, my tastes in Video Games spread to all genres, with the possible exception of puzzle and driving, but there are exceptions even to both of those. However, there are some games that I will never understand the appeal for. Maybe I "had to be there". Maybe I'm a bad person.  Maybe everyone else is a bad person. In any case, this list is in no specific order. No offense meant.

1. The Legend of Zelda: Majora's Mask

I start off with the "other" black sheep of the Zelda series after Zelda 2. However, unlike that game there is a group of people on "the internet" who think it's great. I think otherwise. I found MM to be a frustrating title that focused on sidequests at the expense of what makes Zelda games good, namely the dungeons.

2. ICO

No. I don't think games are art. No. I don't like escort missions. Consider Shadow of the Colossus to also fit in here.

3. Marvel vs. Capcom 2: New Age of Heroes

I think this falls under the "I had to be there" category. I personally find MvC2 (and all versus games) to be totally impenetrable for a person like me, who only has a decent grasp of how to play regular fighting games. Thus, mechanics like Air Combos, tag teaming, and CURLY MUSTACHES will forever be beyond my reach.

4. Etrian Odyssey

Maybe my problem is that I don't hate myself enough (and believe me, I experience constant self-loathing), but the concept of a brutally hard RPG that punishes you for doing poorly and practically forces the use of a guide to avoid total frustration doesn't really click with me. For the record, I still haven't played Demon's Souls so maybe that will change my mind. It sounds cool enough.

5. The Elder Scrolls III: Morrowind

If this list had an order, this would be #1. Morrowind continues to be the bane of my existence, not only because I have tried multiple, multiple, multiple times to get into it with no success, but also because it is revered across the interwebs by certain people who enjoy telling me that I am missing out and how Morrowind is way better than Oblivion (which was watered down for the plebeians). I don't think walking at a snail's pace with no fast travel, no guidance, and no real understanding of what I am supposed to do sounds good in any respect. But what do I know? Apparently this is the greatest game ever made.

6. Fallout

For the record, I think this game is ok, but to say that it deserves a spot as one of the medium's all time greats is hard for me to understand. Once again, I probably had to be there when it happened.

7. Final Fantasy VII

I know jumping on the FFVII hate bandwagon is kind of douchey, but hear me out: being that I was a Nintendo Bitch right up until the Wii made me decide otherwise, I never played this game when it came out. Thus, the wonky translation and the dated mechanics have yet to convince me of this game's majesty. Ironically I think the SNES games are far more awesome than this one.

8. Forza Motorsport 3

Also: Gran Turismo series. Why would I want to play a driving game where I have to use the brake for more than drifting? I don't like driving in real life, so why would I want to emulate that in my video games?

9. Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic II - The Sith Lords

Believe it or not, there are people who will actually defend this game. After the first one singlehandedly sold me on the RPG genre, this one was a massive bummer. Admittedly I'm grasping here, but there are people who like this game. Whoever they are, they have bad taste.

10. Sid Meier's Civilization

Sure, I like Civ games in concept, but in execution I find them to be rather dull and sluggishly paced. Sorry. I like my gratification in more than 3 hour increments.

So.. there it is. Any comments? You hate me? You want to explain why I'm wrong calmly and without frequent expletives?
