Giant Bomb - a website about video games and the people that make them

snide's Articles

We recently bought a Dragon modal for above the crib. Duders. Today is my last day at CBS Interactive, and as such this ends my reign of terror running Giant Bomb / Comic Vine. The reasoning is very simple and quite boring. I love Jeff, the team and the community here all very much, but a few months ago I decided that I'd take some time off once my kid rolled around. So actually, I guess I just...

OK. I guess there needs to be some clarification about my comments on TNT about Mass Effect 2 as I received way too many PMs on the subject. First let me start by saying that of all games released last year, I'd put Mass Effect 2 up there pretty high as the a game I would recommend to a random gamer I met on the street under the age of 30. This is strictly a personal opinion and more a commenta...

If you've read my site bio you know that before I started building sites professionally I made them for fun for the various quake clans I was in. Recently I was trying to find my Vietcong play discs and came across an old dusty CD tittled "Snider, web + art". I give you, dear readers, some of the contents from that disc. As you know I'm pretty supportive of anyone trying to learn how to make th...

By far the hardest thing we're working on right now is the ability for users to link their various accounts from all the Whiskey Media sites into one account. It's rough because we're trying to keep everyones unique usernames and profiles intact in a way that causes the least amount of confusion. I'll likely make a video on the whole merger process but for the meantime gander at this here scree...

It should come as little surprise to most of you that the engineering team here has been working on a paid membership product for Whiskey Media over the last couple of weeks. While I'm gonna wait for each of the sites to make formal announcements about what it includes I figured we're far enough along at this point to start talking roughly about our plan and get some feedback from everyone. I'l...

SPOILERS 5 MINUTES IN!!!! Dunno what happened to the aspect ratio, but here's Tony (from comicvine) and I discussing the star trek movie.

Games like Silent Storm were always my kind of Strategy With few exceptions, I've never really enjoyed RTS games. The amount of frantic key pressing and learn by repetition strategy always put me off immediately. The times I did manage to slog through the first half of any RTS game I was rewarded with 2 hour missions where I spent a good portion of my time building up a base. While that seems f...

Still working on little things, and you'll notice my screen cap program doesn't grab flash vids, hence the large gaps in my blog. Right click and pick open link in new tab to see the full versions. T-minus 1 weekish. Yes, we are that fast / obsessed with our jobs.

An example of a mock I give to our engineers to dread over. So I'm starting week 2 of actual CSS work on redesigning Giant Bomb. It's going amazingly well. You know you're digging the style when you get bummed out when you have to use the live site. The first steps were reworking all the core CSS (buttons, major layout classes...etc). If you've checked out the mocks you can imagine that this ha...

Before we begin this list I think it's fair to mention that I spent at least 50% of my time this year playing two games not released in 2008: Team Fortress 2 and World of Warcraft . I do not regret time spent in either even though there were a lot of great games released this year. I also will mention that as an engineer first and a game commentator second, I have the awesome ability of not hav...

Jeff passed over some copies of Wrath that just came in for Andy and I. You won't see us for a little while guys ;-) White Titan of Woe

I have started to love the japanese philosophy of Kaizen which focus on continuous improvement using small steps. Unlike most big sites, the Giant Bombs dev team likes to push code on an almost daily basis, with a new feature once every two weeks or so. Today I was looking at the forums and realized that they pretty much looked horrible on lower resolutions (1024 or so). Jeff and I had also pre...

Today was the first day I comitted and pushed code on 4 different sites. It wasn't a hugely busy day, but I figured some people are interested on what it's like working on sites like GB so I thought I'd make a post about it. Here was my day: 9:00 - Leave the house and stop in at 7-11 for coffee. Then proceed to walk to work (I like 5 blocks or so away) whilst thinking about how much work I need...

Giant disclaimer: I've only played an hour and a half or so of Fallout 3. This is just a quickie impression. Only ToEE had a better turned based system the Fallout: Tactics There is little in the way I can describe my absolute love for the Fallout games. For a turn-based RPG nut like myself there are very few moments in gaming where I was more happy then when I was messing with my pip-boy. I lo...

No, not Baraka , but Barack Obama . We checked it out and it looks legit. I also noticed when I checked out the page that it had been vandalized (uncool dude). This also brings up the question of whether or not people should be attached to games simply because they show up in ads. My vote would be no, but I'll let the community fight this one out. What do you think? Should a dynamic ad in a gam...

Man-Bot. My favorite video-game character ever. If you have any interest in comics, check it out. It's funny, I was asked on Bomb Should Have a Face the other week what my favorite game was. I of course copped out and said my favorite game was the Infinity Engine in general and not any specific game. I realize now that I forgot that I do in fact have a favorite game... Freedom Force . Made by t...

I'm sorry I cheated on you baby. It'll never happen again. Some peeps have been asking if Andy, Jeff or I plan to finish up our Warhammer series. I'll leave the official answer or review to Jeff if he so decides, but the short of it is that Andy and I quickly dropped warhammer and "went back to wow" (we never really left). I'll try to wrap up the reasons why in a few points for those who are cu...

When we built the guides section we had the hope that users could build better guides if they could work together, add images, photos and tables. Looks like user Lies, pyromaniac and systech proved that to be true. Check out their AWESOME Force Unleashed Mega-Guide .

As usual, I'm playing games this weekend. I'm skipping on Saint's Row 2 , since sandbox games kind of bore me. I may try it out next week if Ryan gives a decent recommendation and I can borrow the office copy. In general though, sandobox games seem to try to do too much and end up just being a miss mash of mediocre mini-games with spotty controls. I tend to like more focused genre games or ones...

Check out the latest Bomb Should Have a Face podcast recorded by Matt Bodega and crew. If you're looking for a more community centered podcast, there's no better place on Giant Bomb.

This guy look familiar? Dunno why, but I had not heard of King's Bounty till I was recently checking Direct2Drive. As a turn based strategy nut I have no idea how this one slipped past my radar. In any case I just picked it up and gave it a whirl for a couple hours. I'll write up a full review later on (maybe the dudes will let me publish it), but lemme quickly say that if you in any way enjoy...

It's funny how the PC gaming market seems to be crumbling at brick and mortor stores and yet... I feel fine. I REALLY love steam, a little too much these days. I'm finding that I'm rebuying older games I may already have just so that I can ditch the CDs and have them available on STEAM where I know I can always access them. This weekend's culprit was Max Payne 2, which at $9.99 has one of the b...

As much fun as I had building Giant Bomb, I've had more fun seeing stuff like Bomb Should Have A Face come out of the community. The fact that a couple dudes from across the world schedule time in their day to get together and bitch/praise parts of the site really pumps me up. Give it a listen. How Matt Bodega is not horse by the end of the show is beyond me.

The last couple weeks I've been working on two things. Getting GB ready for serving ads and allowing people to switch to a white version of giant bomb. Here's a screenie of the white version as it stand at the moment. I'm still working with stuff and switching up colors, but it'll give you a good idea of what the site looks like inverted. ZOMGz

I'm primarily a PC gamer and have been since Doom first came out. I've always loved gaming on a PC because of 3 things... Mouse / Keyboard control is unparalled for shooters The graphics on PC games are always better if you've got a nice setup Western turn-based, complicated RPGs have always been PC only (with the exception of Elder Scrolls) You can mod the hell out of anything STALKER's start...

Bomberman 2 for the SNES Yeah, this WII game is exactly what went wrong with the series To this day I consider Bomberman 2 / Bomberman 93 as one of the pure pinacles of video gaming. It had fast paced gameplay and a perfect feel to it that only games like Galaga had before it. I recently played 4 player Bomberman 93 with Jeff, Andy and Vinny and despite it being 4 in the morning, we all had to...

So... day 1. Let's just say it's blown our expectations. We started last night by deciding it would be better to launch the site at night then in the morning, because even though we were tired, it would be less traffic. Turned out to be both an awesome and a bad idea. The site got up by midnight, and was down by 1am. Seriously, who stays up for a site launch? Apparently the bomb has some hard c...
