In June 2025, TRINFICO Investment Group held its fourth corporate seminar focused on ESG. Managing Director Oleg Belaj has been systematically integrating sustainability principles into the company’s long-term strategy and operational tactics for five years now. High ratings, digital services, successful mutual funds (OPIFs), a robust portfolio of institutional clients, advanced practices, and a focus on green technologies-this is what defines TRINFICO today.

But if we look back 30 years, what would we see? Not a powerful investment group with billions under management, but a fledgling brokerage firm launched by students. Not a sleek and stately ship, but a daring little boat caught in a storm. In Russia, this period is often referred to as the “wild 90s,” a time of turbulence and “shock therapy.” Following the collapse of the USSR, financial chaos reigned, and the country resembled an untamed frontier. Legal norms governing the market economy were still being formed. The gap between 1993 and 2025 may seem insurmountable-but TRINFICO weathered the storm, stayed afloat, and grew stronger.

Oleg Viktorovich Belaj himself belongs to the first wave of Russian entrepreneurs, traders, and investors who entered the market in the early 1990s. At the time, the country’s financial infrastructure was just taking shape. As a young student, he played an active role in that process. Today, as the group’s CEO, he oversees a diversified investment business and promotes the principles of sustainable development.

The biography of Oleg Belaj and the history of TRINFICO reflect the transformation that the Russian financial sector has undergone over the past three decades. It’s also a story about the importance of building a business based on high ethical standards and fundamental human values from the very beginning.

Early Years: Growing Up

TRINFICO CEO Oleg Belaj was born in 1972 in Moscow, the capital of the USSR. His childhood was spent in Zelenograd, a small but notable town near Moscow (within the capital’s agglomeration). In the 1960s, this once-unremarkable settlement evolved into a scientific cluster. Institutes and laboratories were built, and housing was provided to young specialists in advanced industries.

In 1965, the Moscow Institute of Electronic Technology (MIET) opened in Zelenograd. Belaj’s parents graduated from the university, and later so did he.

From an early age, Belaj was fascinated by physics, mathematics, and technology. His family environment played a vital role in shaping him-his parents worked in electronics and programming, and their circle included members of the technical intelligentsia: educated people with progressive thinking who became inspiring role models for the young Oleg.

The "Shock" Era

In 1989, Belaj became a student at MIET, where he earned a degree in engineering physics with a specialization in microelectronics. But by the time he graduated, he had also discovered a new passion-business and finance. It was the spirit of the times that steered him in this direction.

The 1990s were a period of sweeping change and instability for Russia. The Soviet Union had collapsed, and unfamiliar capitalist realities had flooded in. On the other hand, new opportunities opened up for enterprising individuals-opportunities that were unthinkable under the old system. People were suddenly allowed to launch private companies, open banks and investment funds, and trade in securities.

This new economy demanded flexibility, courage, and strategic thinking-qualities that Belaj naturally possessed. His ability to self-educate and his analytical mind helped him grasp the structure and logic of the stock market on his own.

He saw the new reality as complex and risky but also full of unprecedented opportunities. He experimented with different business ventures, sought entry points into the emerging economy, and was drawn to everything new: how markets worked, how the economy functioned, and how trading mechanisms operated.

His early business experiments, of course, came with their fair share of mistakes. But they also offered a vital education. By the age of 21, Belaj already had entrepreneurial experience. As he would later recall, at the time, young people like him were often viewed as seasoned business leaders. It was ambitious youth who became the driving force of social change.

Bold Plans from a Young Team

Belaj was not alone in his pursuits. He found business partners and collaborators, with whom he engaged in financial journalism and traded in vouchers-special securities issued by the Russian government in 1992 for the privatization of state property. Then the idea of starting their own company emerged.

So, in 1993, in the midst of sweeping reforms, a group of students from Russia’s top universities founded a brokerage firm called TRINFICO. Among them was 21-year-old entrepreneur Oleg Belaj, who became the company’s Chief Financial Officer.

Reflecting on those times-on the enthusiasm and youthful idealism-Belaj smiles: “Of course, in that 1993, we dreamed of becoming the number one company in the future.”

Time has tempered that youthful maximalism. The dream of total market domination gave way to a more mature understanding of the industry and the profession. Today, according to Belaj, the company’s principle is “to stay in the flow, among the frontrunners, among those who can sense and ride the waves of the market.” There's no need to chase victory at all costs. The point is not to win a race, but to achieve as much as possible.

As Oleg Belaj puts it, “Financial fortune is fickle.” Anyone serious about entering the investment business must understand this. That’s why the group has made thoughtful strategy and risk management the foundation of its operations. These pillars of professional culture have paid off. TRINFICO is now in its fourth decade of business. According to the National Rating Agency, the company holds a reliability rating of A+.

Beginnings: The Wild Years and Core Values

TRINFICO’s early years coincided with the volatile birth of Russia’s financial industry. The company dealt in vouchers, stocks, currency futures, and treasury bonds. Its toolkit included both traditional financial instruments and the more peculiar tools of the transitional economy. In 1995, TRINFICO established its own in-house analytics agency. By 1997, it had begun offering trust management services.

From the very start-amid the chaos, economic turbulence, and political circus of the time-TRINFICO grounded its work in ethics and professionalism. The team, which included Oleg Belaj, focused not on quick-profit schemes but on building a strong reputation and deep expertise. During these formative years, TRINFICO became a founding member of PAUFOR (now NAUFOR)-Russia’s key self-regulatory body for the investment industry. In doing so, the firm signaled its readiness to work by institutional standards.

From day one, the TRINFICO team set out to build a business that people could trust. Since the company entered the trust management sector in 1997, this commitment proved essential. Managing other people’s assets is not merely a technical task-it is a matter of deep trust.

This reputation for reliability and professionalism later enabled TRINFICO to secure a strong position in the asset management market for non-state pension funds. In the early 2000s, the group began actively collaborating with Russia’s largest NPFs. By the end of the decade, it managed the assets of 26 funds. In 2009, it became the market leader in pension asset management in Russia.

Business Evolution: Steady Growth, Flexible Planning, and Timely Change

Thirty-two years is a long time in business. By 2025, TRINFICO is a far cry from the small brokerage firm it was in 1993. What changed-and more importantly, how did the growth unfold?

Market challenges became catalysts for growth. As Belaj explains, TRINFICO developed an evolutionary business model, responding sensitively to market waves. The company offered timely solutions to emerging challenges and adjusted flexibly to clients’ needs.

Over three decades, TRINFICO has established three resilient lines of development:

1. Institutional Expertise

Efficiency, reliability, and a deep understanding of institutional client needs have become the brand’s key competitive advantages. Even in the 1990s, TRINFICO worked with major joint-stock companies, developed trust management frameworks, and assisted with share consolidation. In the 2000s, it became a major player in Russia’s pension industry.

In subsequent years, the group focused on developing closed-end mutual funds (ZPIFs) and expanded into investment banking, private equity, and real estate.

2. Personalized Investment Solutions for Private Clients

TRINFICO was one of the first Russian companies to develop wealth management services geared toward long-term capital preservation for private clients. Today, the company offers bespoke strategies that combine investment products, tax planning, estate planning, capital protection, and real estate management-at a level consistent with international private banking standards.

3. Financial Inclusion

The company has made financial products more accessible to everyday investors. Digitalization has sparked a wave of interest in investing across all segments of society. Sensing this trend, TRINFICO introduced high-yield mutual funds (OPIFs) with low entry thresholds-starting from just $20–30. Its FX-denominated OPIFs offer yields of 6–8%. Today, TRINFICO is not only a trusted partner to institutions but also a gateway to investing for thousands of individuals.

One standout example is EcoFinance, an OPIF based on ESG investment principles. The fund is designed not only for financial performance but also to reflect sustainability values. Notably, TRINFICO was the first asset management firm in Russia to receive an ESG rating. CEO Oleg Belaj emphasizes that this was a deliberate strategic decision: he and his team care deeply about the kind of world future generations will inherit. That’s why the group is committed to high ethical standards in business and aims to leave a legacy they can be proud of.
