A Chain Reaction of Garbage

Mr. Domino was put on this earth to torture me specifically. No game in my entire life has made me as angry as this smug, plastic prick, barely responding to control inputs and tripping over every half-pixel piece of trash in his path. Appropriately enough, all the elements of this game knock into each other in an ever-building chain reaction of garbage.

On paper, this game is a unique and interesting concept: set up dominoes on your auto-run path to set off a chain reaction of wacky visual gags across 6 levels. In practice, it's one of the single most frustrating experiences ever pressed to black disc. Every control input is delayed, leading to missed spaces or dominoes being unintentionally placed diagonally because you held the d-pad down for half a second too long while weaving between multiple trick tiles to reach the trigger tile. An endless barrage of obstacles will slow you down or knock you off-course, the worst ones forcing you onto a Reset tile which undoes all of your work, including trigger events you've already cleared. The game is played from an isometric perspective, which means any time the track curves it's completely impossible to know what lane Mr. Domino is running in, resulting in missing another trigger tile or running face-first into the 800th obstacle of the level. All of this is topped by an invisible "stamina" meter that acts as your time limit. There is no indication as to how much time you actually have left, and the game fully changes the rules in the final level where the First Aid tiles that usually buy you more time instead have absolutely no effect. Finish the level perfectly or you're dead.

Admittedly, it is fairly satisfying on the rare occasion you complete a full chain reaction that clears the entire level in a single domino collapse. But when the game was over, I felt no joy or relief. Empty, devoid of emotion. "It's done." And as if Mr. Domino himself was channeling my mental state in that moment, I watched him, with his permanent smile etched into his face, jump off the top of a tower and kill himself. Turns out there was exactly one person who could indeed stop Mr. Domino.
