A refreshing and beautiful visual style is the strongest aspect of South of Midnight. The story is good, but feels too dragged out to the detriment of the game overall. The gameplay is fun for the first couple of hours, but the combat and platforming both become repetitive before you even unlock all the abilities and powers. Some bad checkpointing and slippery platforming don't help the experience.
In the end I don't regret the hours I spent with South of Midnight, even though at only about 10 hours long it still manages to feel protracted. The visuals alone are worth checking out if you can get this on Game Pass or at a good discount. Even at full price I think anyone who won't mind simple PS2-era gameplay will enjoy the whole experience.
