This was a triumph. I'm making a note here, huge success. It's hard to overstate my satisfaction. I'm a Mac user but I installed BootCamp and Windows XP (and Steam) just to try this out, based on word of mouth. It was completely worth it - the most fun I've had playing a game in ages.
