For over a decade, the Yakuza series has been overlooked, despite critical acclaim. One of the reasons for this would be due to the game series having a rough start in the US, with poor localization of the first game and very late second and third entries, of which the third entry was notoriously censored. However, someone at Sega has finally realized they are sitting on a goldmine and did a fantastic job localizing this game for the PS4 in the English speaking world. Best yet, this game takes place before the events of the following games and requires no knowledge of the other titles, making it a great entry point into the series.
For those who have played a Yakuza game already, you know what to expect-- but for those that haven't, expect to be immersed in a world with a compelling story, characters, and especially setting. Some have gone as far as to say the Yakuza games are excellent Japan travel simulators, as the environments the game takes place in are based strongly in reality. There is a ton to do in the world including various minigames, and a hundred side missions-- of which many are often hilarious. I am intentionally avoiding writing about the main story of the game-- all I will say is it has a slow start, but once it picks up steam you are in for an emotional roller-coaster ride until the credits roll.
Yakuza 0 is an excellent entry in the series and a great entry point for those who want to get into this quirky, Japanese game. If you like Japan, or just weird crazy stuff in general, this game is a must have.
