Free-to-Play With A Price Tag?

The greatest problem from which Plants vs Zombies Garden Warfare suffers is a lack of variety and things to do. You’ll play the same game modes and maps over and over again. Don’t get me wrong its a fun game but not fun enough to warrant the lacklustre amount of content offered.

Its second main issue is that it feels like a free-to-play game as the option to buy additional in game coins is proudly pushed in your face. Its not necessary to progress as I easily ranked up passed level 40 without spending a dime just frustrating due the nature of the game commanding a price for entry. Perhaps I would feel more accepting had the game been free-to-play, as this too would have explain the multiplayer focus and lacking content on offer. That isn’t to say however that I didn’t enjoy my time with the game; its a fun and enjoyable game despite the aforementioned flaws.

A sort of Call of Duty for kids, although we both know the majority of CoD’s sales comes from the target audience here, the game includes the standard multiplayer options you’d expect to see and a wave survival mode as well. There’s enough variety between the modes but its short lived due to the class options being heavily restrictive. The majority of the customisability comes not from your load out but instead from costumes which can be unlocked via purchasing in-game packs with currency earned from matches (or alternatively with in-game transactions). The costumes themselves are pretty lame and I found myself not caring about them even slightly whilst playing.

Other differences the game attempts to make are including a sets of class specific challenges to complete in order to level up or the ability to spawn in potted plant turrets or additional A.I. zombies to help you in your fight. Once again though little variety and difference is added by their inclusion in the overall experience and my core problems of the micro-transactions, lack of content and overall free-to-play feel continue to flair up and shine through.
