I liked it. Here's why.

I enjoyed Long Live the Queen. The game plays like a choose your own adventure story (i.e. digital novel). The main decision you get to make each turn is how you will spend your time studying, and that can be impacted by your "mood", which gives bonuses or penalties to your classes. I found that managing my mood against where I put my points was fun, and I felt that the story within was compelling enough that I spent a weekend playing.

That said, Long Live the Queen is not a particularly deep game, so it won't keep you busy for too many hours (I got one good weekend). It can blindside you if you don't know what's coming - but I was willing to let that go on the grounds that you know from the start of the game that people are trying to kill you, and assassins rarely announce themselves. All the reviews I read before buying said "be prepared to die a lot", and that's definitely true here. You will almost surely die on your first attempt (and many more thereafter). When the premise in Long Live the Queen is that you're trying to survive to your coronation, it would be darned boring if there wasn't any chance somebody might succeed at killing you, wouldn't it? The skill checks are "fair", in that there's several ways that you could succeed any of them (either by skill or choices in your story), so you aren't pigeonholed into always being the same princess. Learning what's coming does help quite a bit in avoiding death, if you don't pick up on the subtle hints or if you spend your time studying the "wrong" subjects. I would recommend just starting over each play through, and accept that each game is its own experience, rather than trying to manage a single life through multiple saves. That really breaks the flow of the story and undermines one of the best things about the game.

The story itself has the potential to be what you want it to be, and the choices you make are reflected in the overall tone. I think there's a bit of darkness to the overall story from day one, but your choices do matter, and the game will reflect the person you are trying to be. It's hard to comment further without spoiling anything.

I liked the narrative, enjoyed managing my skills with my mood, and liked seeing how events unfold differently based on my choices. I think it does what it does well, without any filler or other things that get in the way of the fun, so I'm willing to recommend it - if this kind of game is your thing.
