Top 5 Games of 2016

by qlanth

It's really hard for me to put together a list of top games any year. I have a hard time comparing disparate experiences. That said, I wanted to at least try to put how I felt into words and maybe try to put together a rough list.

Some honorable mentions:

Clash Royale is a game I play almost every day. I've sunk a chunk of change into it too. They have updated it regularly since release and the only thing keeping it off this list is the horrible mess of a community they have. I wish I could go a single day without someone BMing a match. If this game had a "mute everyone" option it would have made the list.

Overwatch is an amazing game. Few FPS games manage to make you feel good even when you lose. Unfortunately I fell off of it hard and don't feel much compulsion to come back.

Titanfall 2

1. Titanfall 2

Few things excite me more than extremely mobile FPS games. I'm the guy who kind of liked Brink... I know that's fucked up but its true. The original Titanfall ranks among my favorite shooters of all time. I came to Titanfall 2 expecting great multiplayer and it met every expectation. What I wasn't expected was a phenomenal single-player campaign which managed to vary itself enough to stay fun while maintaining a coherency that made me really root for BT and Cooper.

Stardew Valley

2. Stardew Valley

When I look at Stardew Valley I find myself wondering how this game even managed to be made. The single-person development team somehow managed to not only compete with Animal Crossing and Harvest Moon but I think it ended up beating them at their own game.

Doom

3. Doom

As insulting as it sounds, a Doom game released in 2016 should not be this good. The entire FPS genre has moved past what made Doom so incredible in the 90s. id's poor track record from Doom 3 and RAGE speaks for itself. Prior to release this game was barely on my radar. But somehow Doom is incredible. Not only did id manage to translate the fast paced game-play of the original Doom but they nailed the brutal visual style and added a soundtrack that is INCREDIBLE. Everything is executed nearly perfectly. I'm willing to admit that I highly underestimated what 2016 id could do.

Hitman

4. Hitman

I didn't play as much Hitman as I wanted this year. Managed to do a few maps and a couple of illusive targets. Steam says I played 7 hours this year. But, for the Hitman I didn't play there is a LOT of Hitman I watched. Few games are as awesome to spectate. It had to make my list just for the pure joy that brought me all year.

World of Warcraft: Legion

5. World of Warcraft: Legion

When I think about all the games I didn't play this year, Legion is why I didn't play them. Easily the best expansion to date. Finally the class fantasy is back in Warcraft again and its back in force. In particular the hidden relics and special secrets that Blizzard hid in the expansion make it the most compelling to date. Like all Warcraft expansions I fell off it after a few months, but this time I'm feeling guilty about it. I hope they continue to build expansions like this in the future.
