THE 2025 List of the favorite games beaten by Sgt Sphynx in the year 12025. Also known as Sgt Sphynx's GotY 2025

by sgtsphynx

Making list for posterity, also it is slightly different from the list submitted for the GB Mods GotY tabulation and the Community GotY tabulation, but it wouldn't actually change the results. I will also probably beat some more games before the year is through, but I am going to keep those in mind for next year. I hope you all have a wonderful time on my birthday, which is why everyone takes off around this time of year.

Citizen Sleeper 2: Starward Vector

1. Citizen Sleeper 2: Starward Vector

This game, and the previous one, spoke to me on such a personal level that I cannot accurately describe my feelings for it. The way my story played out makes me hesitant to try to do another run of the game. To me, like with the first game, it is a canonical ending.

Clair Obscur: Expedition 33

2. Clair Obscur: Expedition 33

Regardless of finding out about the use of AI in the early development of this game, I cannot deny how much I enjoyed the gameplay and story of this game. The characters were likable, and plot unfolding was engaging. Just an all-around great game marred by the use of AI, for some that may be a deal breaker, and in general it is for me, but in this instance, it does not change my feelings on the finished product.

Silent Hill f

3. Silent Hill f

Is Silent Hill f a Silent Hill game? There was a lot of discussion concerning this in comments sections you should not venture into. The answer is yes; it says it right there on the tin. When you boil down the themes of a Silent Hill game, Silent Hill f hits all of them. It deals with trauma and the supernatural and is creepy as fuck. For once, the combat felt good, and while some will argue that is counter to the series, I'd argue that while combat is not the focus of a Silent Hill game, it being better is a good thing. My first run through this game, I actually played counter to my usual completionist tendencies, so when the actual themes of the game where plainly laid out on my second run, it caught me off guard and was a very effective sequence. The further fleshing out of the themes and situation really worked for me and because the game had good combat, I was not pushed away from seeing all the endings. And the boss fights were fantastic.

The Séance of Blake Manor

4. The Séance of Blake Manor

This is an outstanding detective game. It being set in Ireland, and the area of Ireland that my ancestors came from, is just the connection for me to really dig into reading literally everything in this game.

Unbeatable

5. Unbeatable

Just a banger year for games that really hit me in the gut. I will admit that I had to turn on the assist mode for a couple of fights, I may be able to play bass, my age has eaten at my speed a bit. Good fun rhythm game.

Avowed

6. Avowed

I have been a fan of the world that this game is set in since I got the rewards for backing the kickstarter for Pillars of Eternity. I just really do love that world and I was in the mood for an Elder Scrolls type game.

Dragon Quest I & II HD-2D Remake

7. Dragon Quest I & II HD-2D Remake

The original Dragon Quest, which I knew as Dragon Warrior, is among my favorite games of all time. For two decades, it was my favorite game period. The updates the made for this game and the updates for DQ2, outside of the camera, are all greatly appreciated by me. It seems to me that the developers of this game had an understanding of what made the first two games great to begin with.

Hollow Knight: Silksong

8. Hollow Knight: Silksong

Was it worth the long wait? I don't know. I do know that I enjoyed this game and I am glad that it did not pull a DNF.

Doom: The Dark Ages

9. Doom: The Dark Ages

I don't know, sometimes I just want a good shooter and this was just that. I am also a weirdo who likes the story in the recent trilogy.

Skin Deep

10. Skin Deep

I don't know what I can say about this. It has the right kind of absurdist humor for me. It is essentially a puzzle game, which I love. It is just a fantastic game in my opinion.
