Surprise! Yeah if you know me you know I'm a Warframe sicko. It tickled me when the duders had the "Teno-Tub" at the Summer Games Fest house this year. This game had a big update at the end of last year that was just amazing. Story was compelling, wild, and kept me asking more questions than there were answers for this games world. The Summer update was more of an expansion of the 1999 update but still gave us more story and lore to comb through. Its my forever game, which is funny because I never really had one of those. Also they managed to get Werner Herzog to do a commercial for them this year's big update and that's just awesome.
I'm still playing this so no spoilers. I'm not sure I want to finish the game. Its just fun to peel back all the little clues and mysteries in this house. The world being this alternate history world too and really scratching an itch I didn't know I had. This game literally just sold me the remakes of Myst and Riven because I just wanted to play those games again in a new way because this game gave me that feeling again.
Do you have a youngin who wants to play along but feel bad that they have a hard time with controls still? This is the game. The devs for this one got the memo. My kid loves this game because she feels like she's playing it. What do you mean Andrew? I mean that while she is controlling her cart, it is self propelled and will steer itself a little too. This way she has control but the game doesn't let her get stuck on the railing or going the wrong way. Of course there are higher difficulties but the attention to the core audience was surprising and great. Wish the folks who made the Bluey Game got that memo. Speaking of which
Yeah played a lot of this one too. Kid loves Bluey, my wife loves Bluey, I love Bluey! Its a great show with good writing that doesn't talk down to it's audience and sort of has some educational moments for us parents too. The game eh, its okay but she has a hard time with the controls, but she is getting better. So its kind of good that way for helping with learning a dual stick control scheme. Plus you can throw your kids around in the game when you play as one of the parents. Oh and there was free DLC! They added a new quest with Uncle Stripe and Muffin. Muffin is truly the best and I'll die on this hill bleeding screaming POLICE until the end.
Sometime ago I learned there is a name for the fear of seeing something just under the surface of a body of water. Thalassophobia. And I've been dealing with it my entire life. I successfully killed a massive case of Arachnophobia in my early 20's but never truly realized how much of a thing this was. So I decided what better way to try to kill this one than to play a game that is basically using thalassophobia as a game mechanic. I am actually really enjoying it and I'm a sucker for a good fishing mini-game and this is just a big collection of them with the added benefit of Eldridge Horror!
This is a game I had on the Nintendo DS years ago but never got to finish. I recently found my old DS Lite and a new battery and an R4 card later I was playing it again. Its just so silly a fun and weird and I miss when hand held games were just these weird ideas devs were trying out.
This one was great while working a very dull part time job this year. I have it on the Switch and it was fun going back to this game as the last time I played it it was on the NES. A little more forgiving than that version too.
They managed to make a GTA without it being about a lunatic shooting everything with a pulse. Genuinely funny and feels like a B-game that should have come out for Xbox Live Arcade, and I don't mean that as a negative.
I'm a musician. My main instrument for the last 30 years has been the guitar. I, therefore, am fully in the mire that is Guitar YouTube. Rob Scallon is one of the less annoying ones and usually has a really good video to watch when he posts something new. When I found out he was trying to make a game I thought, "good luck!" and then it came out. And its also good? Imagine Mario RPG style combat mixed with a rhythm game. Thats what this game is. The music is killer and the art style gives off a nice warm fuzzy feeling for that early SNES style.
Woah, this a tenth game? I played more than just Warframe this year? Wow. Okay, moving on. This is just the first jrpg-style game I've played since Chrono Trigger that has made me feel this deeply about it's story and characters. Even when I kind of figured out the twist to the world, I was still surprised by what was really going on. The fact that they managed to write in a character that is basically Tom Bombadil filled with wine and rhymes is also impressive. Even more impressive is that I care so much about him. Esque is a vibe and if there is a sequel I will not accept it unless he's in it.
