I completed this on New Year's Day. More of an interactive movie than a game, but in spite of that, I enjoyed my 2 hour tour. Given that I got it from a PSN sale I'm fine with the dollars per hour value. Visually the game is spectacular, but the music is the best thing about this game. The story the game tells? It contains a bit of weirdness that serves to distract from the fact that it's not anything special, but its serviceable enough and presented in way that feels fascinating. Glad I played this.

Gryphon Knight Epic

Gryphon Knight Epic

I finished the PS4 version of this game on January 6th. I think the "boxart" on the PS Store does this game a disservice in making it look like some crap phone game, but this is actually one of the best side scrolling shooters I've ever played. Aside from your standard blaster you get new weapons from each boss you defeat, Mega Man style and there are also other upgrades for your character hidden throughout various parts of the level. There are times after clearing a screen where you can choose the direction your going in the level, normally this is just a forwards or backwards choice, but depending on the upgrades you have you may find another direction open to explore leading to another new upgrade or at least a treasure room with lots of coins in it. Graphically the game gives off a medieval Metal Slug vibe in terms of the look and how characters animate. The ultra precise controls are another thing that makes me think of Metal Slug. Great game with a very high recommendation for me. Currently the normal asking price for the title is $9.99-- well worth it. Way better than a month of WWE Network.

Mega Man 4

Mega Man 4

I finished this on January 26th (Less than a week after Doctor Wily took office) on the Steam version of the Mega Man Legacy Collection. I had played it back in the day when I was a kid but couldn't quite overcome the end game back then, but I didn't have much trouble this time more or less rolling through the game with a few hiccups near the start and finish, but nothing too severe. Great game.

Double Dragon IV

Double Dragon IV

I finished this on February 3rd. A lot of negative press about this game either not expanding on the other Double Dragon games enough or general disappointment towards it being an NES style game instead of an insane brawler with Guilty Gear like art. Personally I liked the game a lot. It plays... well it plays like Double Dragon. It has fun combat, bad platforming and some frustrating enemies to deal with, but at its core it's a good game and comes with a very fair price of entry.

Mega Man 5

Mega Man 5

Once I got 4 out of the way it was time to dive in on this one I missed out on back in the day. Another great Mega Man game. This one definitely had a difficulty nerf from 4. Lots of 1ups provided by the game, but in spite of that it was still really good. Not sure where it ranks among its peers, too soon too tell, but it's a good game for sure.

Inside

Inside

I finished the PS4 version of this on February 9th. I passed over Limbo back in the day so this was my first experience with this insanity of this studio. It seemed like a well-made dark themed puzzle platformer at first, but by the end madness took grip. A good game with clever puzzles and some real "what the hell?" moments in it. I'm not sure I'd call it a top 10 game of the year, but I can see how it could really impress someone with an affinity for the genre.

Mega Man 6

Mega Man 6

I finished this game on February 11th. This game had some of the coolest robot master designs in all the series so far - maybe the best. After the cakewalk that was Mega Man 5 they turned the difficulty back up a bit here, nothing too substantial though. As a late era NES game you could tell Capcom had really mastered tapping into the systems potential in this one. A real benchmark game IMO.

Mega Man 7

Mega Man 7

I beat this game on February 20th. Goddamn was this game hard. I had been pretty much blazing through the other Mega Man games to this point, but this one absolutely was a ball buster. The final battle with Wily gave me fits as I struggled to find a way to defend against his attack pattern, ultimately I persisted and won. Felt good. Until I went to Youtube and saw how simple that attack that gave me so much trouble was to dodge in actuality. Oh well.

A King's Tale: Final Fantasy XV

A King's Tale: Final Fantasy XV

I finished this game on March 8th. So this was a bonus included with certain editions of FFXV I think, but Square later put it out for free as a PSN Store game. It's a really good brawler even if it is only single player. The game more or less tells you how to specifically beat each enemy in the game and so it becomes a giant plate spinning brawler where you are having to execute the same plan over and over with another step getting added to it every now and then. It's short and tremendously fun. Probably a better game than the real Final Fantasy XV.

Double Dragon Neon

Double Dragon Neon

I also finished this game on March 8th. This game has a rep for being kind of dumb so I didn't really rush to play it, but man am I glad I did! This is easily the best Double Dragon game and an amazingly fun multiplayer game. Also the final battle and ending are among the most memorable in the genre.
