Best of 2013

by bladeblur

2013 was amazing. I think my top 10 here is perhaps the best I have done on this site so far!

The Last of Us

1. The Last of Us

I think it fused great gameplay elements with emotional narrative perfectly. It took what the Walking Dead did in 2012 and amplified it in my opinion.

Fire Emblem: Awakening

2. Fire Emblem: Awakening

I think this game deserve a lot for being a rather unappreciated series that managed to gain such a following in 2013. The relationship aspect alone was a great addition. I played XCOM earlier the last year, and it even topped that in my book.

BioShock Infinite

3. BioShock Infinite

Considering my previous disdain to the franchise, the fact that Infinite changed my outlook on it is admirable. The exciting gameplay and fantastic setting made it one of the most memorable experiences I had. Also Elisabeth is friggin hot.

Tomb Raider

4. Tomb Raider

Tomb Raider gets a lot of flack. While it may look like another grim reboot to a franchise, it had a lot of great set pieces and perhaps the coolest weapon of the year. The bow. More games needs bow and arrows.

Super Mario 3D World

5. Super Mario 3D World

I think this game capture the childhood whimsy like nothing else. Yes, the first half of the game is easy, but unlike 3D Land I found the level design to be much superior in terms of creativity. This makes up for the ho-hum Mario year of 2012.

DmC Devil May Cry

6. DmC Devil May Cry

I would have never imagined that this game would end up as high as it did considering the backlash, but I haven't had so much fun with a Hack'n'Slasher since Bayonetta. New Dante isn't the Old Dante, but frankly even if you put a geriatric fish monger in the main role, it would still have the gameplay mechanics of a AAA title.

Pokémon X/Y

7. Pokémon X/Y

I burnt 350 hours on Pokemon Y. I have to put it that high. I would've ranked it as #1 if the game wasn't a major cakewalk or the post game content was rather shallow, but besides that it gave the series a much needed rejuvenation.

The Legend of Zelda: A Link Between Worlds

8. The Legend of Zelda: A Link Between Worlds

I may not be the biggest Zelda nut in the world, but I appreciate a good design when I can see it. Solving puzzles on my own was one of the most satisfying things I have ever done in a video game.

Tearaway

9. Tearaway

In my humble opinion the Vita is in a much worse state than the WiiU. Tearaway is by far the best thing to happen to the system in... well... ever really. Not just because of the great visuals, using all the vita's gimmicks and the clever design. Actually wait, yes, it's all those things.

Injustice: Gods Among Us
