I'll be honest, 2014 was a horrible year for me on a personal level. Even more so than the year before, I found myself escaping to my favorite pastime. So, because of that, I actually have TEN games on my list this year! Crazy.
These 2014 games stuck out to me in all the best ways possible and helped to remind me why I continue to love video games.

While the first one is still the best in the series, Dark Souls 2 expanded upon on a lot of what made the first one so great. Challenging, deep and fun, this game remained my most satisfying game experience in 2014 and it's the only game I loved enough to beat twice this year (something that never happens for me anymore).
Cool Disney/Ralph Bakshi inspired art, challenging tactical gameplay and a dark 'end of the world' Viking storyline, The Banner Saga is one of the most unique gaming experiences in recent memory. The somber tone coupled with choices that come with consequence made for a great time. A couple questionable design choices (XP = Money?!) hold it back from being my numero uno for the year.
The Nemesis system makes this game as amazing as it is. The LOTR property was unnecessary and the story/characters meant very little to me. The story missions were mostly whatever. That said, the Arkham combat mixed with the Nemesis system makes this game incredible. It's the kind of gameplay that I wanted from the Assassin Creed games, so much fun to just play the game! There were plenty of Orcs who I developed actual "grudges" against.
A great number of BioWare games are some of my all-time favorites, but the company has undergone several dramatic changes in recent years and I was honestly really worried going into Dragon Age Inquisition. Luckily, the game mostly met the quality standards that BioWare had established in the past. The storyline and characters are still well written, the gameplay is fun (though still not fantastic or near DAO quality) and there were a number of very satisfying moments. Definitely not my favorite Dragon Age or Bioware game, but I'm happy to say that BioWare still "has it" in a lot of ways. They kinda "overdid it" though when it came to sheer content.
This game grabbed the MTG nerd in me and didn't let go. Addicting and one of the games I casually played the most throughout the year.
What a cool universe! Lots of people complained about this series/season, but I had very little problems with it. I was hooked, all the way from Episode 1 to 5 and greatly enjoyed my time with Wolf Among Us.
Addictive! So much to unlock and see! It's the definitive version of a game that is one of the best in it's genre. MOMMMMMM! Poop.
Amazing presentation and atmosphere, I really love the look of this game! Best played with the lights off and headphones on!
A unique take on the survival genre, This War of Mine is filled with tense moments where you do what you can to make it through to the next day. RIP Marko.
A really cool take on the 4X genre, plenty of unique factions to choose and filled with tons of possibilities and ways to play the game. In some ways, it out-Civs Civilization.
